Readable, Helpful, and Interesting Intro to Music Theory

Music theory is often seen as unnecessary and boring to even the most musically inclined persons. Many see it as a hindrance to their natural creativity. However, without a sense of music theory, nobody will progress from playing music, to understanding and even writing music.
I took a music theory class in college and used a textbook that tried to say the same things that Miller says, only the textbook was far more confusing. I think this book would actually make a fine textbook for an "Intro to Music Theory" class. He covers most basic topics, even assuming that the reader has no music knowledge. This is good for beginners, but for me it meant that I only skimmed the first few chapters. He does cover more advanced topics such as harmony, counterpoint, transcribing from audio, and transposing. At the end of each chapter, he has quizzes to review and test what was learned in the previous chapter. He includes most important topics in music theory, including scales, pitches, rhythm, melodies, chords, chord progressions, phrases, transcribing, arranging, writing lead sheets, and performing. At the end, the book has a glossary, a guitar and piano chord reference section, and answers to the quizzes at the end of each chapter.
Overall, this book has many good qualities. It is very readable and interesting. He also is able to convey difficult topics in an understandable way without sacrificing his point. Most music theory textbooks cannot do this, and overwhelm the reader. I would say this book is best for students who need an easy-to-understand book to complement a more advanced book, to clarify what they have learned in a music theory class. It is also good for musicians who don't want to be experts in music theory, but who wish to further their musical abilities. However, as I have said, it also works on its own, and I believe rivals many textbooks that are five times as expensive.

I have bought many books on Amazon but have reviewed them very rarely. I had to review this one though because I think it fills such a significant void. I have struggled with learning music theory for quite a long time and have used standard texts such as Walter Piston's famous book "Harmony". I've always felt very disoriented and have never failed to lose the forest for the trees...until I bought "Music Theory, The Complete Idiot's Guide".
It breaks you in very slowly. In fact, it assumes that you don't even know how to read music. This may make for a few wasted chapters for those who already do such as myself however even these chapters have some useful, not frequently taught information.
The rest of the book (the vast majority) is incredibly useful and GENTLE! Miller doesn't give you too much information, just enough to get you going, to familiarize yourself with the language of melody, chords, chord progressions, voicing and rhythm. The book is clearly geared to people who wish to compose or write arrangements and will get you started at these endeavors very quickly without a lot of overly complicated theory.
If it's a detailed, exhaustive textbook you're looking for, forget it. You'll be extremely disappointed. But if it's a quick, user-friendly introduction to this very complex business then you should definitely check this out. Having read it, I feel much more willing and able to look at more advanced books. Considering the objectives Miller has for his book, I'd definitely give it five stars for achieving those objectives.

A Touch More Than Just A Music Theory Book!

What a nice little gem this was to find. I have a degree from Berklee College Of Music in Music Production & Engineering. For the last 15 years I've been hung up reading equipment manuals and music software manuals. Recently I decided that I wanted to pursue something I've always known I had the ability to do but never took the time to craft; the art of songwriting. This book served as a great refresher! The author hits on all the key concepts that you need to sit down and create an original song from scratch. No book out there can make you a great songwriter, that holy grail does not exist! The only thing a book can do is provide you with the tools you need to get started, and this one does it rather well. To supplement this text I would highly recommend a book on modern arranging. Once you have a song structured out, melody written, and harmonized, the arrangement is the finishing touch that can really set it apart and make it a memorable experience for the listener. I've yet to find a relevant book on the concept of modern song arranging. If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know. This one is a steal for its price!

One of the few places to open them with open arms, the Jews have a long history with Canada. "Canada's Jews: A People's Journey" is a look back at the long line of Canadian Jews. With the history ranging from 1760 and forward, it explains how Canadian Jews have forged their own unique identity in the country, which gives them unique qualities from Jews elsewhere in the world. All is not sunshine and rainbows, however, as it also speaks on the dark side of Canadian Antisemitism. "Canada's Jews" is a must for any with interest in Canadian and Jewish history.

This book has inspired since i read it in 2005, decided to decline traditional HIV therapy & seek alternative therapies. HIV+ since 1986, no meds since 2007 & doing great. I recommend this book to anyone suffering with AIDS. This latest edition includes new information. The vendor was reasonably priced & fast shipping.

Five Stars In the Heads Up Department

Over the years I have actually purchased three of these as gifts for doctors whom specialize in Immunology and HIV. After reading it for myself I found it to be a wealth of information and a heads up on Anabolic steroids and an assortment of supplements when used correctly. The media lies and so does the FDA and if you think they don't, then do your own research. Steroids are not a bad thing when used correctly but ignorance and lack of knowledge is and that can be deadly. Knowledge is priceless, if you trust the FDA and pharmaceutical companies in telling you the whole truth, then shame on you.

An overview, of course, but it does cover a lot of ground...

Environmental science isn't for dummies, even though there is a Environmental Science For Dummies book. This book will not teach you environmental science, since it is a combination of geology, ecology, population biology, climate science, botany, conservation biology, oceanography, and more, including the basic sciences of chemistry, physics, and math.

This book is, however, a good overview of the topic. Are you interested? Do you want to know more? This book may help you with a career choice, or with getting you started to learn more about a particular subject.

There's an emphasis on sustainability and sustainable living. This may or may not be considered environmental science. I'm happy to call it applied environmental science.

Author Alecia Spooner got a few things mixed up. For example, she defines "environment" as "all living and nonliving things that interact in a specific area." Then she defines an "ecosystem" as the "living organisms and the environment that they inhabit and depend on for resources." So when you combine these two definitions, she seems to define "ecosystem" as "living organisms and all living and nonliving things that interact in a specific area that they inhabit and depend on for resources." She's really defining ecosystem both times.

But I did like her observation:

"Regardless of your political or cultural beliefs, the facts are the same:
- Billions of people have only one planet to share
- All human beings depend on the natural resources of the Earth to survive."

And she does discuss the "precautionary principle," an important concept in conservation biology.

I'll keep this one on my bookshelf to lend out.

Okay, this is the kind of book someone should consider picking up if they want to read more about 'What's the deal with the environment and the science surrounding it?"

I've read a number of Dummies books over the years and what I like most about them is the accessibility and organization.

This book gives a nice breakdown of the areas of environmental science. I like that it starts out with a half page of "Where to go from here" so as to direct the reader to places of particular interest (i.e. what brought them to this book in the first place).

Overall, found this digestible and accessible for those who are curious, but not ready for an academic format.

More Important Topic than Most Realize

Nikola Tesla had predicted how long World War I would last by observing the relationship between the populations of the countries fighting, military strengths, and the logistic growth model, which this book explains in detail. It goes further into discussing the "carrying capacity" of environments. It was the exhaustion of its environment that began the fall of the Mayan culture, long before the contact with the Old World. Cultures clash and die off based on the carrying capacities of their environment.

The point is if we wish to survive, we must understand our environment. This understanding requires the science facts of air, soil, water, as well as human factors to cooperate and collaborate for a sustainable future.

He is a twentieth-century Italian aristocrat whose madness traps him in the role of the Holy Roman Emperor, the German Henry IV, who reigned from 1056 until 1105. Numerous comparisons have been made between Pirandello’s “Henry IV” and Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” The affinities between their protagonists include madness, along with the pretense of madness, involving a consummate theatricality. Like other “mad” Pirandello characters, the man consumed by the role of Emperor Henry IV has been judged to be insane by a society that he judges to be insane. Madness, for Pirandello, can reveal a particular lucidity that gives access to truths not evident to “normal” people. Pirandello’s one-act play “The License” (“La Patente,” 1918), displays an earlier version of this theme. Its main character, Rosario Chiachiaro, may be mad or pretending to be mad as he also dons a costume and prepares to play a role for the rest of his life, the role of a purveyor of the “evil eye” — his means of self defense against a society consumed by hypocrisy and superstition. — “After the brilliant translation of “Six Characters in Search of an Author,” Mary Ann Witt and Martha Witt return to Pirandello with yet a bigger challenge: translating the complex play “Henry IV” and placing it next to “The License,” a much less performed work. About the Author
Luigi Pirandello was born on June 28, 1867 in Kaos, near Agrigento in Sicily, where his father owned sulfur mines. He left Sicily to study in Rome and eventually completed a doctorate in linguistics at the University of Bonn in 1891 with a dissertation on the dialect of his home town. He initiated his writing career as a poet. In 1894 he married Antonietta Portulano, the daughter of one of his father’s colleagues. The couple settled in Rome, where Pirandello became acquainted with other writers. He began to write short stories — eventually hundreds of them — and to adapt some of them for the stage. In 1903 the failure of the family sulfur mines caused severe financial problems for Pirandello, his wife, and their three children Fausto, Stefano, and Lietta. Antonietta began to suffer from severe mental problems from which she never recovered, and she was eventually placed in an institution. Needing to work, Pirandello taught at the Magistero, or normal school. He published his first — still his best-known — novel, “The Late Mattia Pascal,” in 1904 and an important theoretical essay, “On Humor,” in 1908. His early plays such as “Sicilian Limes” and “Liolà” explore the Sicilian mentality and culture, contrasting it with those of the mainland. His period as a major dramatist began with “Right You Are (If You Think So)” in 1916 and culminated with his two greatest plays, “Six Characters in Search of an Author” (1921 and 1925) and “Henry IV” (1922), now both newly edited and translated by Martha Witt and Mary Ann Frese Witt and published by Italica Press. A member of the Fascist Party as early as 1923, Pirandello hoped that Mussolini would support the Teatro d’Arte, which he began to direct in 1925, staging his own plays, some foreign plays, and the works of contemporary Italian dramatists, including Massimo Bontempelli. Il Duce, however, although expressing interest in his work, never gave financial support and the experimental company disbanded in 1928. Despite this disappointment and other disagreements with Mussolini, Pirandello remained a loyal fascist until his death. Pirandello was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934 for his “bold and brilliant renovation of the drama and the stage.” His plays are still regarded as groundbreaking and a major influence on modernist and postmodernist theater. He died in Rome on December 10, 1936.

I just love the way Faye writes. She just able convey right emotions thru words. When she right goosbum I also get them when she right pain in heart lump in throat I also get them when she writes happy nd romantic scenery also become dreamy. I just lover her.... Nd bat book uhh it's superb someone just said that u should my judge the book by its cover.... this book is all bat that. When everyone says he is bad boy Katie explore him and his good side come out...... I m happy that I bought this book
