German artist John Heartfield (1891-1968) is widely considered one of the inventors of photomontage. In the 1930s, he produced some of the most visually arresting and politically hard-hitting artwork of the 20th century, appropriating the widely circulated propaganda of the time to create its total antithesis. David King's book is simply one of the finest I've ever read about my grandfather. The pages are rich with many very high quality John Heartfield images. I especially enjoyed the manner in which they are presented. The original maquette on one side and the corresponding AIZ cover on the other. This allows to reader to view the many artistic nuances of Heartfield's work that are lost in the mass reproductions.

This book is an absolute must-read for anyone with an interest in John Heartfield and his work.

Kathy's book amazes me because she manages to take one ruler technique and make so many different looking quilts from it. And the patterns look easy and fun! I just love the Merry-Go-Round quilt, and the optical illusion in the Pick Up Sticks pattern is mesmerizing. Not for the novice quilter

This book has several lovely patterns and the childhood story with each pattern is a delightful touch. Please be aware that EVERY pattern includes LOTS of bias edges........ matching and sewing those endless bias edges together may not be to every quilter's taste! With that warning in mind, I like the book and will probably make at least one pattern [Fat Man's Squeeze], though I cringe to think of 8 bias points coming together and behaving nicely enough to lay flat!

Several of the patterns [Read All About It & Daydream Believer] would take a real glutton for punishment to make using the triangle ruler technique when they can be made quicker and easier using conventional strip techniques which results in no bias edges to match.

Inspirational fabric combinations. Patterns are for smallish quilts - lap or twin size.

WOW - Fantastic Book!

I do not have a single complaint about this book! Each pattern is very detailed and easy to understand. There are tons of diagrams to guide you through each step. These quilts are quick & easy and they make excellent use of jelly rolls & honeybuns. You don't have to buy the specialty ruler that the book suggests. You can easily use any right-angle triangle ruler that has 2-1/4" and 4-1/2" markings. (I am using the Fons and Porter Half & Quarter Ruler.) I highly recommend this book for people who love using jelly rolls!

A Good Book!

Kathy Brown has put together some wonderful quilts using strip pieced triangles in "Strip-Smart Quilts: 16 Designs from One Easy Technique".

Although all the quilts in this book are pieced in a similar manner, but have remarkably different feel. I love the warmth in the brown fabrics in "The Twist", the whimsey of "Penny Candy" and the sophistication of "Read All About It". It is difficult to believe they are all created using the same technique.

One thing important to note is that all the quilts in these books are made using a specialized quilt ruler, the Creative Grids 90º Double Strip ruler CGRDBS90. (It is available here at Amazon for $26.95 [...]. Although I believe it would be possible to make the quilts using a more traditional ruler, it is worth the investment if you plan on making more than one of these quilts.

Let's answer the burning question straightaway: Steve Thomas believes that Patsy Ramsey is responsible for the death of her daughter, JonBenét, Christmas night 1996. As a key member of the team assigned to investigate the murder of the 6-year-old girl, the former detective knows the facts of the case as well as anyone, and the conclusion he draws is convincing and clearly presented. And, as it turns out, his theory about who may be guilty of the crime is just one of the shocking revelations in JonBenét: Inside the Ramsey Murder Investigation.

From the outset, it was a textbook example of how not to run an investigation: JonBenét's body was moved from where it was discovered before clues could be gathered, evidence was mishandled or removed altogether, the coroner failed to conduct routine procedures to determine time of death, and the crime scene was not sufficiently sealed off for hours after Patsy Ramsey's 911 call first summoned the police. In all, the initial response was inept, and it served to undermine the entire investigation; the utter lack of cooperation with the police on the part of John and Patsy Ramsey then compounded the difficulties. Within hours of the murder, the Ramseys had their own team of high-priced lawyers, who effectively insulated them from any direct contact with detectives. Nearly four months passed before police were able to question the parents at length, and only then on the condition that the Ramseys be given full access to police reports and evidence prior to the meeting. In essence, they behaved like suspects, and when Thomas and other detectives tried to determine the Ramseys' guilt or innocence, they were stymied every step of the way by Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter and those under his direction.

The hostile relationship between the police and the D.A.'s office slowed the investigation to a crawl, and, in Thomas's eyes, proved the principal reason an arrest was never made. Despite copious evidence against them and glaring inconsistencies in their testimonies, particularly Patsy's, the Ramseys were not even officially listed as prime suspects until March 1998 because the D.A. would not permit it. All the while, Thomas alleges, Hunter was leaking sensitive information to tabloid journalists and allowing the Ramseys' lawyers to dictate the direction and scope of the investigation. Thomas eventually resigned from the police department after exposing the D.A.'s mismanagement of the case, and a grand jury was called. But the grand jury investigation was ultimately undermined by the D.A.'s refusal to hear the testimony of several detectives closest to the case.

Somewhere in the midst of the politics, the legal wrangling, and the in-fighting between the D.A. and the police department, the central focus of this case was lost: justice for an innocent 6-year-old girl. Steve Thomas has returned that fact to the fore in this important book. --Shawn Carkonen

About the Author

An excellent account of the total screw-ups in this case

An excellent account of the total screw-ups in this case. What a shame!!! I believe that crimes committed by celebrities/the wealthy (e.g. OJ Simpson, etc.) seem to get botched by the authorities that are enamored by the celebrity involved. No justice was served here nor in OJ's case. Sad, sad, sad. . .

Lost my interest with his opinion

I understand the author had a viewpoint, and used this book to allow his readers to hear it. Yet, there was underneath the message, a determination to have his opinion be the only opinion that matteted in this case. That was dusturbing to me. It felt very personal. He lost his way in my opinion, and my interest by this distraction. He might be wrong, he might be tight.

Fascinating read

This book is an exhaustive behind-the-scenes look at the Ramsey case ... Very interesting to read the detective's point of view and feel his frustration. So many times while reading it I said out loud, to no one in particular, "no way!!" But the twists and turns, roadblocks and sabotage kept right on happening. Once you start reading this book you won't be able to stop. It is compelling. I plan to read it again just to pick up on the unbelievable details that I might have missed.

About the Author

Curtis Robbins, a graduate of Gallaudet University, taught American Sign Language and deaf culture for forty years prior to his retirement in 2007. He has published several poems found in three anthologies of deaf poetry. He is married with two grown children and lives in Maryland.

Who says one has to be deaf to truly understand this beautiful, insightful book of poems. Was not one purpose of the book to let all understand the true meaning of deafness or the true meaning of any disability, and what mountains need to be climbed.

You almost have to be deaf to appreciate Ribbon' s writings. As a deaf person I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Teachers of the deaf will probably "get it" also. I have this down loaded so will no doubt read it again.

Emotional

This book is emotional, which is sometimes all a romance reader wants. For those who want a reasonably consistent heroine, this book leaves a lot to be desired. I started out really liking Heidi and feeling for her situation, her husband tragically killed, bringing up a troubled son. She seemed deep and mature, someone you could root for.

Then the hottie cop shows up and she instantly starts giggling, touching, flirting--only to brutally slap him down without explanation when he works up the nerve to follow up on these signals by romantically buying her flowers and asking her out. Then, when he comes back around solely to help her son, she starts coming on to him again, physically snuggling against him--and is infuriated with his perceived lack of a response. What happened to the woman I liked and wanted to root for?!

Then there's the hero of this story who has his own tragedy to deal with. This is the most emotional guy I've ever come across. He has highly unlikely touchy-feely moments with almost every man in his life, and of course every woman. When he breaks down and cries it has lost all of it's impact because of how emotional he's been throughout: blushing, trembling, stomach flipping, voice shaking.... This doesn't feel like the kind of guy who'd be interested in becoming a cop.

The story is predictable, but not obnoxiously so. Her vicious, gloating reaction to his pain when the truth comes out pretty much finished any sympathy I had for her. And his decision to have sex with her before making sure of his suspicions about who she really was is kind of creepy. In the end this fell waaay short. But I'm giving it three stars because I've learned that romance readers are willing to put up with a lot, as long as its emotional, and this story is very emotional.

If there would have been six stars I would have given this book 6 stars. Its deffinetly a 5 star read

If it were possible to give this book 6 stars I would. The characters are rich and fully developed.The story is about a woman and her son, three years after the woman's husband died in a terrible car crash. They meet a police officer who had spent the last three years after accidently killing someone. The three of them start to change and become happy again until....... You really don't want me to tell you what happens. I will only say when the book ended I was crying Happy tears, but I had also been crying sad tears. then it was over and I wanted to know more. I wanted to know what else happened to those characters, that I had come to love. Its well worth the read.

A new series, and I want more from the Kensington Family

This book is first in a family series, there are eight Kensington children so I am hoping that each one gets a book. Shane and Heidi both have tragedies that they are still grieving from when they meet, I realized that there was a connection in their history early on and it broke my heart. As they fell in love and you sit on the edge of your seat waiting for one of them to figure out how their pasts are connected my heart broke some more for them.

As an added bonus the point of view was alternating (which is my favorite) and a bit of suspense to the storyline. I normally don't write about grammatical errors unless it is really bad, but since this is a first book for this author I want to point out that there were no grammatical or misspellings errors that I noticed.

Outstanding history of Verdun

The Price of Glory is one of the best histories I've read in months--and as a graduate student in history, I have been inundated with books of such varying quality that something as good as this must stand out. Horne's history of the Battle of Verdun has it all: political intrigue, grand strategy, shocking battlefield horror and some truly moving stories of guts--and glory.

Verdun had been a relatively quiet sector until 1916, when the German army attacked and nearly overwhelmed the French army units holding the line there. The defenses were centered on a string of disused fortresses, and it became the German army's all-consuming obsession to capture these fortresses. The battle almost immediately stalled when the Germans found they could not move their artillery over the bombed-out landscape they had created, and so the Battle of Verdun turned into a contest of attrition, with each side throwing numbers and materiel at the other until someone cried "uncle."

It is part of Horne's purpose constantly to remind us of the tremendous loss of life on both sides, and of the stupidity with which war during World War I was waged. He draws very colorful depictions of the major figures involved, including the almost bovine Marshal Joffre of the French army--soon to be relieved by Petain--the eerily impersonal Feldmarschal Falkenhayn, who commanded the German attack, and even the "minor" players who took and retook positions from one another. But the book is not only a well-written, informative history, it is also exciting. A number of passages describing hotly contested moments on the battlfield--such as two incidents involving attacks on the French fortresses by German shock troops--are as thrilling as any novels I've read.

If the book has any one flaw, it is that, while Horne points out that Verdun was the longest battle in the war--and perhaps in history--he focuses primarily on the first few months of the ten-month ordeal. One wishes he had fleshed out the final months in more detail, but the book is otherwise so good that this seems like a minor quibble.

The Price of Glory is a thrilling and informative history of one of the most brutal and tragic battles in world history.

A glorious book about a tragic battle

If you want to understand World War I, this book about the battle of Verdun is a must-read.

A history professor once told me that World War I, the French Revolution, and the U.S. Constitution had inspired more history than any other events or episodes. World War I exhausted Europe; at the outset, its armies, navies and colonies held dominion over much of the globe, but at the end it was a pauper continent, with both victors and vanquished shattered by deaths and debts, reparations and revolutions. And Verdun marked a pivotal moment in this transformation, for here the generals revealed that they had too few ideas about how to win--but too many men still to feed into the meatgrinder.

Because of battles like Verdun, many associate World War I with images and episodes straight from "All Quiet on the Western Front" or "Paths of Glory"--futile attacks and counterattacks, weary and shell-shocked men running across pulverized land only to be killed or maimed by mass-produced bullets and explosives, victims of Europe's collective skill at the industries of war. In this meta-narrative, the perpetrators of this mass slaughter remain hidden, distant, aloof, living in idyllic chateaux miles away from the mud and the blood, their actions either inscrutable or idiotic.

Horne pulls back the curtain to reveal the character and personality of those generals, showing their unique strengths and weaknesses and how those character traits played themselves out in one of the greatest battles in human history. By writing so well about the decision-makers, he makes the churned earth and spilled blood more tragic--and more understandable. Verdun, a battle Horne describes "the battlefield with the highest density of dead per square yard that has probably ever been known" was by all accounts a supreme test of wills for both France and Germany. In Horne's hands, though, it becomes something more tangible and real, a clash not just of armies, but of people.

In addition to the excellent human descriptions, though, Horne writes wonderfully and vividly about the scenes of the battle. Some authors and books wring the life out of historical events, turning them into stale words on dead paper. But Horne brings this monstrous battle to life, vividly describing the claustrophobic underground tunnels of shell-battered Fort Douamont and the clutching terror of phosgene gas. Horne takes a catastrophic battle of mind-boggling proportions and makes it all too real.

The Battle of Verdun in all its Horror

"The Price of Glory: Verdun 1916" is a great work of military history that examines one of the most brutal, terror-filled episodes in one of the most brutal, terror-filled wars in human history. Horne's account of this battle is well written and easily accessible without sacrificing the depth and detail necessary for a true understanding of this engagement.

By late 1915, with its armies in virtual deadlock with its enemies throughout Europe, Germany decides upon a bold gamble. Conceived by General von Falkyenhayn, the German Army Chief-of-Staff, the attack upon the French fortress city of Verdun was prepared to break the stalemate. The objective of this battle was as chilling as it was desperate: Germany could afford to lose more men than France, hence the attack would not be one to achieve a 'breakthrough' or to capture some vital sector of the line, the battle would be one of attrition, one which was designed to bleed the French Army dry before it bled the German Army dry. Horne chronicles this plan and the opening moves as the German Crown Prince leads his army into the cauldron.

Horne expertly relates the many stories of heroism and folly within this battle; from the surprise storming of one French fortress to the hopeless but valiant defense of another; from the reshuffling of German commanders to the creation of a supply system for the besieged town; from the desperate realization by the Germans that the plan is not working to the even more desperate French realization that their line could fall apart at any minute.

This is an important book about one of the bloodiest chapters in human history and a necessary component to any World War I education. Highly recommended.
