From the Back Cover
Metabolomics: Methods and Protocols examines the state-of-the-art in metabolomic analysis. Leading researchers in the field present protocols for the application of complementary analytical methods, such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Metabolomics: Methods and Protocols contains forward-looking protocols, which provide the essential groundwork for future efforts in elucidating the structure of the unknowns detected in metabolomic studies.

Part I of this volume focuses on GC-MS techniques; specifically, attention is given to metabolite profiling in blood plasma, construction and application of mass spectral and retention time index libraries, and metabolomic profiling of natural volatiles. In Part II, emphasis shifts to data integration and data mining techniques, and specific protocols discuss improving pattern recognition and biomarker selection for systems level approaches, and visualization and analysis of molecular and metabolomic data. Parts III, IV, and V examine the coupling of capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, classical reversed phase liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and electrochemical detection of metabolites using HPLC separations coupled with coulometric electrode array detectors. In Part VI, protocols for the determination of metabolic flux rates are presented and a theoretical framework for metabolic pathway network analysis is provided. The volume concludes with an examination of cutting-edge NMR protocols.

A Collaboration of Scholarly Approaches to Metabolomics
By Danielle
I bought this book because I'm really getting into the idea of Metabolomics and hoping to branch into it somewhere down the line.

I've been away from university science for some time and wasn't sure what I've been missing in terms of advancements and how the current technology I use may bleed into it.

I found the book to be helpful. Its kinda a specialized book but the format is one more of bringing together research papers into a small volume of work where you have the opportunity to read the many different techniques and protocols in detail based upon a protocol developed in a lab.

Its not a book really meant for those who are just beginning to get involved in metabolomics and the significance of it... nor is it good for someone who has limited experience in laboratory research before.

Its not a bad book, but you may find other books out there to be more appetizing.

The Old Regime and the Revolution, Volume I: The Complete Text (Volume 1), by Alexis de Tocqueville

The Old Regime and the Revolution is Alexis de Tocqueville's great meditation on the origins and meanings of the French Revolution. One of the most profound and influential studies of this pivotal event, it remains a relevant and stimulating discussion of the problem of preserving individual and political freedom in the modern world. Alan Kahan's translation provides a faithful, readable rendering of Tocqueville's last masterpiece, and includes notes and variants which reveal Tocqueville's sources and include excerpts from his drafts and revisions. The introduction by France's most eminent scholars of Tocqueville and the French Revolution, Françoise Mélonio and the late François Furet, provides a brilliant analysis of the work.

Amazon.com Review
One is sorely tempted to allow the marvelously lucid prose in Alan S. Kahan's new translation of Alexis de Tocqueville's study of the French Revolution speak for itself: "In 1789 the French made the greatest effort ever undertaken by any people to disassociate themselves from their past, and to put an abyss between what they had been and what they wished to become." But as Tocqueville found out when--with the hindsight of half a century--he examined the historical records, the revolution was really not so radical a turn of events. "True, it took the world by surprise, and yet it was the result of a very long process, the sudden and violent climax of a task to which ten generations had contributed." Thus the first volume of The Old Regime and the Revolution concerns itself with the state of affairs before 1798, getting beyond the "confused and often mistaken notions" of his contemporaries "about the manner in which business was conducted, the real practices of institutions ... the real basis of ideas and mores." Although many historians have taken on the French Revolution in the years since Tocqueville's analysis was first published, few have addressed the subject with as effective a combination of insight and clarity. --Ron Hogan

From Library Journal
This is a new translation of Tocqueville's last masterpiece, written in 1851. Best known as the author of Democracy in America, Tocqueville focuses here on the meaning and origin of the French Revolution. This volume is organized into three major subjects. First, it looks at the nature of the French Revolution. Second, it examines the origins of the revolution in an absolutist and aristocratic society. Finally, it considers the reasons for the sudden outbreak at the end of the 18th century. Tocqueville discusses the continuity of French political behavior in relation to persistent class hostility, government centralization, and the preservation of individual and political freedom. This book surpasses older editions of English translations because of its readability and because it is based on the French critical edition that includes the author's sources and materials from his drafts and revisions. Kahan (Florida International Univ.) is also translating the work's second volume, which is to be published in 1999 by the University of Chicago. Recommended for academic libraries.?Mary F. Tres Tres Bien
By Sara
Tocqueville has always been, and probably always will be, known as the author of "Democracy in America," a wide-ranging and perspicacious study of the early republic. However, it's when he writes about his own France, and its political system that he knows so intimately, that Tocqueville is at his best. Unlike "Democracy," "The Ancient Regime" is neither sprawling, judgmental, nor inaccurate. These are excusable lapses, of course, in a grand work of poignant analysis, but such deficiencies do not mar "The Ancient Regime." This book is succinct, beautifully written, expertly researched, and incredibly original. Because Tocqueville was French and worked in the French government, this work is much more focused, specific, and accurate than "Democracy" (written hastily after a 9-month tour of America in 1830-31). It is simply a brilliant work, the creation of a curious and sometimes eccentric mind.

the great French observer of America looks at France
By Orrin C. Judd
Alexis de Tocqueville is, of course, the most perceptive observer of American democracy ever to grace our shores, his Democracy in America one of the most important books ever written about democracy in general and the American Republic in specific. Here, in a less read work, he takes on the origins of the French Revolution and the peculiar French form of democracy it brought and proves an equally keen observer of his own country and countrymen.
De Tocqueville makes several vital points about the French Revolution: first, that it built gradually and, given circumstances in France, was inevitable; second, where the American Revolution had as its lodestar the ideal of freedom, the French Revolution was motivated by a passionate hatred of inequality; third, the demise of all insitutions other than the monarchy in France made it certain that when Revolution came, it would be violent and unchecked; finally, this combination of factors lead to the bizarre nature of the French Revolution, with no developed institutions to turn to once the King was gone and with no great emphasis placed on freedom, the French people were willing to tolerate the nihilism of the Terror and the authoritarianism of the governments that replaced the monarchy. He does not make the case, but it lies before us, that the American Revolution was fundamentally a positive action, a demand for greater freedom, but the French Revolution was a negative action, a demand that the few not own more than the many.
This book was to be followed by a second volume dealing with the the Revolution itself, but he died before he could continue the work. That is a shame; it would have been interesting to have some more insight from him into the French, it seems unlikely that anyone has ever rendered a better description of his people than the one he offers in his Conclusion:
When I observe France from this angle [their temperament] I find the nation itself far more remarkable than any of the events in its long history. It hardly seems possible that there can ever have existed any other people so full of contrasts and so extreme in all their doings, so much guided by their emotions and so little by fixed principles, always behaving better, or worse, than one expected of them....Undisciplined by temperament, the Frenchman is always readier to put up with arbitrary rule, however harsh, of an autocrat than with a free, well-ordered government by his fellow citizens, however worthy of respect they be. At one moment he is up in arms against authority and the next we find him serving the powers that be with a zeal such as the most servile races never display.
In the context of this paragraph, we can begin to understand Vichy France and the bureaucratic tyranny of the modern French nation. I say "begin"...

Bad translation
By Jon Elster
I criticized this translation when it appeared ("Tocqueville in English", European Journal of Sociology 1999), listing some 60 gross mistakes reflecting ignorance of French grammar. Some of my criticisms were cited and endorsed by P. N. Furbank in his review in The New York Review of Books, April, 8 1999. Furbank wrote that "It is to be hoped that in any future edition the University of Chicago Press will take account of these and the many other criticisms of the translation that Mr. Elster has made". I have not checked systematically, but the passages I looked up have not been modified. I wonder why.

Supernatural: Writings on an Unknown History, by Richard Smoley

This gem-like, concise anthology provides thoughtful people with both an introduction to the paranormal and a reason to take a fresh look at it.

Nostradamus...channeling...Atlantis...divination. Most serious people consider such topics nonsense. But look again. Writing with intellectual verve and a deeply critical mind, religious thinker Richard Smoley explores and reconsiders the supernatural in history and today.

We are often conditioned to think of the Judeo-Christian tradition as the only valid, historically accurate, and rational spiritual philosophy. Occultism, magic, and the esoteric are, by contrast, considered illegitimate, delusional, and lacking in intrinsic worth. Supernatural challenges this prejudice, revealing that Western occult traditions are richer and more historically impactful than most of us imagine. The book reveals hidden diamonds and neglected ideas that characterize the magical tradition in the West.

For any reader, at any level of experience, who has ever been curious about an arcane subject – from psychical powers to secret societies – here is a book that gives a complete yet precise, critical, yet serious, and always respectful account of topics from the unseen world. Supernatural is a brilliant primer to the occult and magical traditions of the West.

A short compendium of thoughtful articles
By Alan S. Glassman
Richard Smoley's latest book offers a collection of some of his articles first published in New Dawn magazine as well as a few from other periodicals between the years 1997 and 2012. Altogether, this relatively short volume is composed of 16 separate chapters, each of which is a small gem of its own designed to be fast and enjoyable reading.

While I'm guessing the book's title is a play on words of P.D. Ouspensky's In Search of the Miraculous: Fragments of an Unknown Teaching, the chapters themselves offer us brief glimpses of a variety of subjects suitable for the novice of metaphysical studies as well as those who have specialised in that area for a long time. Considering myself to be a member of the latter category, I found many delightful and interesting titbits of information of which I had not been aware.

Perhaps what is most engaging about this book is that Smoley gives us insight into some of his own personal experiences in the realm of the supernatural, whether they be direct encounters or accounts related to him by others. With his usual skilful writing ability, he tempts us to go further into our own investigations of subjects like archaic wisdom, Nostradamus, prophecy, The Da Vinci Code, the 2012 phenomenon, Atlantis, Freemasonry, The Course in Miracles, the nature of prayer, and many other areas of study.

Smoley's knowledge of Greek and Latin enlightens us with definitions with which we may not have been familiar, and add to our understanding of sometimes difficult subject matter. As early as in his Preface, for instance, he gives us the root of the word "esotericism" as coming from the Greek esoterikos, meaning "further in." This resonated and added to my mundane definition of that word as merely "hidden."

Whether he's talking about such diverse ideas as the Kabbalah; Tarot; the Western magical tradition; widening our observing faculties and qualities of attention in the manner taught by G.I. Gurdjieff; C.G. Jung's world of archetype and synchronicity; the predictions of Edgar Cayce; the astral realm; sacred literature; Priory of Sion; Mayan Calendar; Theosophy; the Rosicrucians; the Kahunas of Hawaii; Gnosticism; Hermeticism; psychic protection; and a host of other fascinating topics, Smoley presents them all in a thoroughly delightful and down-to-earth way.

The author's thematic stream prods us to develop our own way of finding our true Self, our real "I," if you will. While there are innumerable methods for this in the "esoteric tradition - the body of knowledge that underlies all the great spiritual traditions of humanity," Smoley cautions that we cannot necessarily find this in ordinary religion which "involves a relationship with a personal deity." Perhaps we can only find the useful and correct method for enlightenment in the sacred and secret technology of "real" magic prompted by meditation and directed imagination.

Of course, Smoley admits we are left with many more questions than answers as to the nature of other realms beyond our own that may, indeed, be generating and controlling factors in our day to day lives here on Earth. He reminds us, "We do not know. The evidence would seem to suggest as much. At any rate, I am convinced that we will not understand the rise and fall of civilisations, or history itself, until we do know."

And, he reiterates, a small step in beginning to crack the barrier to that knowledge is to get in touch with what it is, both within us and outside of us, that "experiencing." But, he cautions that, "...this is not ordinary ego, with its thoughts and desires and judgements. Why? Because we can step back and look at all these things within ourselves. If we can look even at internal events, what is doing the looking?"

In the final chapter of the book, entitled "The Dual Nature of Reality," Smoley gives us the goal from the Samkhya, thought to be the oldest of all Indian philosophical systems. It can be, and perhaps should be, the ultimate goal for those of us who are involved in metaphysical pursuits.

He summarises that ancient teaching's objective and intended result in this way: "The spiritual path, which is for a long time the process of detachment, is a means of gradually separating the `I' from the world, that is, separating consciousness from the contents of its experience. At this point, supreme illumination takes place. The old world falls away, and a new one arises. Such is enlightenment."

Facts or Fiction?
By Anna from InannaWorks
Smoley takes us on a tour of all things esoteric using his personal journey into that world as the framework. Beginning with the revival of interest in occultism which blossomed along with Hippies and Free Love, through the consolidation now known as New Age, and finally arriving at today's New Consciousness, he separates fact from fiction bringing reason and common sense to subjects which have been exploited and misrepresented in proportion to the profitability that was generated.

With scholarly precision, he revisits Nostradamus, The Da Vinci Code, Atlantis, Freemasonry, A Course in Miracles, New Thought, and many other famed repositories of "secret wisdom". Fair and clear-eyed, he communicates what his research unearthed in a surprisingly lively style. He speaks honestly to his readers as he recounts, elaborates and debunks. It makes for an intriguing read as well as excellent reference material. For those of us who also lived the journey he writes about, it a nostalgic revisiting with interesting clarifications.

Good read, and well worth the wait.
By Mr Pasquale Di Rago
Richard Smoley is one author that I have a lot of time for, ever since I stumbled across him in New Dawn Magazine, several years back. His latest book offers a variety of topics, ranging from Prophecy to Hidden Masters, Atlantis to the power of Prayer, and much more besides.

But be warned these topics are vast in scope and if you wish to really explore them then Supernatural serves only as an appetizer, and not the main course. For that you need to possibly belong to a mystery school, or have a vast library and infinite time to spend in pursuing your interests. And let us not ignore the very critical aspect of experience.

Nonetheless, Richard Smoley has written a very good book, and one that allows one to gain a grasp of some of the basics. At least as far as understanding is concerned.

But I think the real worth, for me comes in Richard's words that appear at the end of each chapter, where his experience and knowledge, humility and wisdom really shine through. I wont spoil it for you, other than to say, that Richard has a gift of putting things in their right place and in their right order. And that is far better than being led astray.

Review
"A great joy! New, inspired translations that resonate deep in the heart." --David Curtis, Founder & Executive Director, Tibetan Language Institute

"Nicole Riggs gives a fresh and brilliant context to Milarepa's songs. A new, vibrant perspective." --Keith Dowman, Translator,

From the Publisher
Have you ever wanted to read Milarepa's "Hundred Thousand Songs" in the clear, direct words that we use today? Now you can, thanks to "Milarepa: Songs on the Spot." This book presents a modern, daring translation of Milarepa's songs, in which he challenges his listeners with teasing caricatures of their behavior, unveils the ego-plays behind their thought patterns, and inspires them with his wisdom and compassion.

From the Author
Milarepa sang his songs almost one thousand years ago, but the issues he so skillfully raises - the wonders of ordinary awareness, genuineness and the traps of the ego - are more relevant than ever. For that reason, it seemed that he needed to be heard again, in the rythms of today. I have thus opted for a modern translation which I hope brings to life the clear, vivid voice of Milarepa.

Wonderful translation
By Alicia
For me, this review of these famous Buddhist stories reads much better than the Chang translation of "The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa." This is pretty amazing considering the Chang translation is considered the "classic." But after 40 years, the English language has changed and frankly, the vocabulary needs refreshing. When I read Nicole Riggs's new translation, it seems like Milarepa is speaking directly to me! That shows what a wonderful translator she is. Her book makes these terrific stories more accessible to a new generation of readers, and that's worth a lot.

By chris tanzen
How do we deal with the challenges of life--with moments of anger, grasping or sheer indifference? In this remarkable book, the greatest Tibetan yogi of all times, Milarepa, gives clear, profound advice on managing everyday challenges with an open heart and a lucid mind. At the same time, thanks to a poetic translation by Nicole Riggs, Milarepa's songs touch beautifully on the ultimate nature of reality. Very accessible and at the same time extremely profound.

New Milarepa translation - The best I've read
By Yeshe Zangpo
The life of Milarepa is a classic for Tibetans and for Buddhists worldwide. But with this new translation (the latest Milarepa translation to date), the book becomes meaningful for students of all backgrounds and all religions. It's the most inspiring Milarepa I've read - the best.

Why Elders?: A Biblical and Practical Guide for Church Members, by Benjamin Merkle

Why Elders? A Biblical and Practical Guide for Church Members is a straightforward and readable guide concerning the bibical role of elders and deacons. Each of the four major chapters answers the question as to why elders are crucial in the church today. The elder model of church leadership is important because (1) it is the pattern of the New Testament Church; (2) it provides help and accountablity for a pastor; (3) it produces a healthier church; and (4) it promotes the biblical role of deacons.

From Publishers Weekly
This celebrated, splendidly matched author-illustrator team here present a 64-page love story that is equally sweet and silly. For years, Mr. Hoppy has leaned over his balcony rail to gaze longingly at Mrs. Silver, who lives one floor below him. But all of her attention and affection is showered upon her pet tortoise, Alfie. Although the creature seems content, his devoted owner is concerned because he has gained a mere three ounces in the 11 years she has owned him. When the distressed Mrs. Silver tells her neighbor that she will be his "slave for life" if he can find a way to make Alfie grow, the determined Mr. Hoppy devises an elaborate scheme to make her think the tortoise is growing. (Since tortoises, according to Mr. Hoppy, are backward creatures that "can only understand words that are written backwards," his exhortation to the pet begins "Esio Trot"--which is "tortoise" reversed.) It is a happy Hoppy who gets all the credit--and Mrs. Silver's hand. Adults and older children will appreciate Dahl's superior storytelling skills, and will chuckle at Blake's animated, cartoony drawings. But the book's length and subtle humor make it less suitable for beginning readers. All ages.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-- What is this? A love story by Dahl? By the master of the malign, the nabob of the nasty, the king of the coarse, the baron of the body function? Can it truly be he? Well, in a word . . . yes--it can. And to those who still disbelieve, it's a sweetly insouciant love story at that. For years, old Mr. Hoppy has loved his neighbor, Mrs. Silver, a widow who, alas, only has eyes for her pet tortoise, Alfie. The details of how her wish that Alfie would grow a little faster inspires Mr. Hoppy to win the widow's heart will not be divulged here (but it has something to do with the fact that "Esio Trot" is "tortoise" spelled backward). There's not much room for character development in this slender story, but Blake's jauntily scribbled illustrations are--as always--the perfect comic complement and manage to give even Alfie a personality. --Michael Cart, Beverly Hills Public Library

Review
"In this delightful story Roald Dahl gives us a very unhero-like hero; he his an average man who has to use his intelligence to get what he wants. Readers will laugh out loud when they realize what Mr. Hopper is up to, and they will be interested to find out if his rather devious scheme is going to work out" Through The Looking Glass

I read Esio Trot by Roald Dahl.I tought it was the best book I ever read. Mr.Hoppy wanted to marry Mrs. Silver. Mrs. Silver did not know that Mr. Hoppy wanted to marry her. The book is about his plan to get Mrs.Silver to fall in love with him. I liked when Tortoise number 8 got stuck in his house. I also like when Mr. Hoppy wrote in tortoise language. That was funny. My favorite part was when Mr. Hoppy had 140 tortoises!

Expendable Alfie
By Amanda Richards
This takes no time at all to read

You're done in half an hour

It shows how far a man will go

to prove he has some power

To win the love of Mrs. S.

He pulls a clever ruse

If he can make her tortoise grow

He knows she won't refuse

Tortoises with matching shells

He plays his clever game

It takes an awful lot of work

To win his dizzy dame

ESIO TROT (spelled backwards please)

Gets larger as he'd said

And when he even shrinks it down

He gets inside her head

The moral of this leery tale's

"All's fair in love and war"

If you really want your lady's heart

Then it's worth cheating for

good book......

Hi I'm Elyssa I'm in 2nd grade. I'm 7 years old. I just finished reading Esio Trot .It is about a man named Mr.Hoppy. Who loves a woman named Ms.Silver.Ms.Silver has a pet tortoise that she wants to grow so Mr.Hoppy gives her a piece of paper that says some weird words.I like this book because it is funny. I think the funniest part of this book is when Mr.Hoppy gives Ms.Silver the piece of paper and Ms.Silver says there are an awful lot of poos in there aren't there? I love Roald Dahl books. My favorite Roald Dahl book is Matilda. Matilda is a little girl who can read all the books in her house by the age of 3.I recommend both Matilda and Esio Trot for ages 7 and up. I wish I could tell you the ending .But you'll have to read the book to find out.

Supercade: A Visual History of the Videogame Age 1971-1984, by Van Burnham

It was a time when technology was king, status was determined by your high score, and videogames were blitzing the world...From Pong to Pac-Man, Asteroids to Zaxxon -- more than fifty million people around the world have come of age within the electronic flux of videogames, their subconscious forever etched with images projected from arcade and home videogame systems.

From the first interactive blips of electronic light at Brookhaven National Labs and the creation of Spacewar! at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; to the invention of the TV Game Project and the myriad systems of Magnavox, Atari, Coleco, and Mattel that followed; through the rise of the Golden Age of videogames and forward into the imagination of millions, Supercade is the first book to illustrate and document the history, legacy, and visual language of the videogame phenomenon.

Exuberantly written and illustrated in full color, Supercade pays tribute to the technology, games, and visionaries of one of the most influential periods in the history of computer science -- one that profoundly shaped the modern technological landscape and helped change the way people view entertainment.

Supercade includes contributions from such commentators and particpants as Ralph Baer, Julian Dibbell, Keith Feinstein, Joe Fielder, Lauren Fielder, Justin Hall, Leonard Herman, Steven Johnson, Steven Kent, Nick Montfort, Bob Parks, Carl Steadman, and Tom Vanderbilt.

From Publishers Weekly
The generation now in its 30s pumped innumerable quarters into free-standing video consoles with protruding joysticks, steering wheels, and "fire" buttons the quaint precursors of today's dollar-based sensory overload and sleekly sophisticated home systems. Burnham, an L.A.-based Wired contributing editor and a member of the Video Arcade Preservation Society, lovingly collects screen shots of faves like Space Invaders, Pac-Man and Q*bert, along with early games like Computer Space and Pong, and home games from Atari and Nintendo. The cheeky capsule descriptions of each game from Burnham and others are matched with longer essays from writers like Julian Dibble (My Tiny Life: Crime and Passion in a Virtual World), who writes about the text-based game Adventure, and former Feed editor Steven Johnson (Emergence) on Atari competitor Intellivision. The chronological organization holds the book's disparate games and players together adequately, but readers looking for a straight narrative history should look elsewhere: this is all about memory jogging and rapturous description. Notably, Burnham did the book's text, design and production; the layout is quirky and provocative but not disorienting, and the print quality is excellent. (Nov.) Forecast: While the book can't compete with the actual experience of playing the games, Burnham's time capsule will given as a gift among gamers (not a small subculture), and browsers from its demographic will at least flip through. The MIT imprint could lead to some campus acquisitions, especially for schools with modern media and culture departments.

From Library Journal
Initially thought to be mere fads, video games have become entrenched in global popular culture. These two books use different approaches to document the phenomenon. Kent, a freelance writer, interviewed video game innovators such as Atari founder Nolan Bushnell and Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani, among hundreds of others, to provide a definitive history. He includes photos of the major video game players and quotes extensively from his interviewees in an academic but highly readable style. The promised index will be needed to navigate the text, but this remains a fascinating and well-researched account of the games many of us grew up with or have encountered in an arcade.

From Booklist
Remarkably, the first interactive computer game was programmed in 1958 ("Tennis for Two," devised as a way to occupy bored guests to Brookhaven National Laboratory), and the first commercially available hardware able to download games over telephone lines was produced in 1982 (Gameline, a modem marketed for the Atari 2600 game system). These are but two of the many fascinating facts in this lively, colorful history of the golden years of the video game (i.e., the years before the personal computer became the primary medium of the games). The author, a contributing editor to Wired magazine, enlists the help of numerous experts in the field to tell this splashy story in a detailed but userfriendly style. For some readers, this will be a trip down memory lane (Atari, Activision, Pong, Space Invaders, PacMan); for others, an eyeopening story about the quest for video-game supremacy. Either way, it's a winner. David Pitt

Photoshoped Mame Screenshots and some extra
By John IV
I'm 33 and cut my teeth on Firetruck, Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Dkong. Having been involved with the Mame project for 6 years, which attempts to preserve arcade games through emulation, I'm always interested to read new books on this subject. Supercade caught my attention with its gaudy presentation and heft. It's a glossy collection of easily smudged pages with screenshots taken from Mame with rudimentary Photoshop filters applied along with some image skewing, and flyers and cabinets shots also from the collection/emulation community. Most of the screenshots are accompanied by short descriptions that could easily have come verbatim from Mame's history.dat file, originally compiled by Brian Deuel. One could also imagine the author going through Mame32's year folders one by one looking for tasty tidbits to present as one-offs or games not as mass produced as Pac-Man. Steven Kent's books do a better job burrowing into the stories behind these games and I enjoyed his writing style more than this author. All that said it does still have merit in that it nicely lumps all of this together in what could be described as a coffee table style art book. It may provide an accessible entry to the classic gaming genre for the newbie, but the hardcore will already have delved into other more mature offerings on the subject, including Mame itself which this book owes for much of its information.

No Content, All Fluff
By James R. Marous
I was extremely disappointed with this book. The content of this books consists entirely of video game screen shots taken from PC based emulators and small snippets of information taken from other, better books. There are no notable insights in this book, and the writing is weak and uninspired. There are many notable exceptions in the content of this book, including one of many collectors favorite games, Atari Quantum.
The book holds up fairly well (relatively) on the raster games, but on the true XY games, the emulator screen shots do no justice to the beauty of the real thing. Do not excpect any history lessons on arcade games in general either, there are other, better books for that.
If you want to learn a little about the games you play on your emulator, this may be the book for you, but if you are looking for info on the history of video arcade games, you will not find it here.

Interesting content, but the book itself is horribly made
By Richard G.
For anyone interested in early videogame history, this is a nice coffee table book to have lying around. It's filled with interesting information and game trivia. Nothing deep, but there are other books for that ("Understanding Video Games" is one that comes to mind). However, what really kills this book is that, unless you plan to have it sitting sexily on some book shelf, it WILL fall apart. The pages and cover are of excellent quality, but the binding appears to be double-sided tape. Open the book up at the middle, and there goes your spine.
