Libby Kumin, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is the Director of the Graduate Program of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology at Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland, where she is also Founding Director of the Down Syndrome Center for Excellence. She is the author of COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME (Woodbine House, 1994).

A must have!

While written specifically for children with Down Syndrome, this book is an excellent source of information for any parent of a child with a language impairment, advocate or teacher. It clearly encompasses best practices in the provision of language services to students with language impairments and gives valuable-- and specific-- insights and advice on the design of IEPs and curriculum. The language is clear and accessible to those without professional training or certification in speech and language pathology. My non-Down Syndrome child has a language impairment and I am involved in professional ESE advocacy; I use this book extensively in training parents on SLP issues, best practices, delivery models , and the development of meaningful IEPs. I also suspect that an earlier reviewer intended to review another book, this is not a book about reading or phonics, but about the provision of educationally relevant services and development of academic and functional skills for students with communication impairments.

Buy it for your child's teacher!

This book picks up from where Dr. Kumin's earlier book, "Communication Skills in Children with Down Syndrome" leaves off. Aimed at the elementary and middle school years, this book is about developing good communication and learning skills. Parents and teachers interested in reading skills will want to look at, "Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome," by Patricia Logan Oelwein. I have had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Kumin speak and she is undoubtedly one of the leading expert on communication skills in children with Down syndrome. The book starts with a look at what language skills a child will need in school and then goes on to discuss building a team and a curriculum to reach that goal. The main topic of the book is how to help the child with Down syndrome learn in an inclusive environment. Dr. Kumin shows us that children with Down syndrome can learn and can succeed but they may need to have the curriculum adapted to their needs. For example, she shows how worksheets can be confusing for a child with Down syndrome but she also shows how they can be easily adapted to make them less confusing. Many children fail, not because they don't understand the material but rather because they have trouble following complicated multi-step instructions. One specific example she discusses is math word problems. The complex language of the word problem can be very difficult for the child to understand even though they have no difficulty doing the actual math problem. Dr. Kumin discusses how IDEA requires that children with disabilities be given accommodations in order to help them be fairly assessed. As a parent or a teacher you will want to read this book. The research discussed and the many ideas put forth can help a child succeed and build self confidence where before there was fear and failure. If you are a teacher of a child with Down syndrome, buy this book. If you are a parent of a child with Down syndrome then buy two copies, one for yourself and the other for your child's teacher.

A must have for parents and teachers

This book is full of information to help parents and teachers adapt the language demands of the classroom to the needs of their child with Down syndrome. There's information on how the teacher can adapt her spoken instructions, written work, and classroom routines for the child with Down syndrome. There's information on figuring out how the speech therapist could best help your child master the curriculum and improve his communication skills--not to mention how to advocate for the type and amount of speech therapy that would most benefit your child. And there's information about how parents can work with teachers to make homework assignments do-able and meaningful for your child, as well as ways to enrich communication development outside of the classroom. I must say that it sounds like the previous reviewer meant to review a different book and mistakenly clicked on this one! Her review seems to be about a book on teaching reading--Classroom Language Skills includes a little information about adapting reading work in the classroom, but goes way beyond that. She obviously didn't read the same book that I did.

Applied to Economic Development...a Region's Future!

Having previously read and commented on the book while it was still a completed draft, I recently came back to the finished book to help me think through a challenging problem I was stuck on, related to best practices in Economic Development. The insights of Dr. Richard Florida's books, like the current bestseller, The Great Reset, provide a way of thinking about the dramatic changes in 21st century economic expansion & jobs creation. Awesome stuff! Then, applying the practical "guidelines" from "The Ever-Evolving Enterprise" (E-Cubed), I cracked the code to develop a workable template for thinking through a local initiative dubbed "Cape Fear Future". It was the Eureka Moment! Aimed at ensuring the ongoing economic prosperity of the Greater Wilmington NC Region, Cape Fear Future has many stakeholders. But the range of skills and backgrounds are very diverse, and sometimes making progress can be as daunting as the Tower of Babel. For every Italian word that we have chosen, we have written the English translation. An example phrase is given for each word, following always the same scheme:

I like the simple organization: Italian word, short Italian phrase, English translation. The Italian sentences vary in form, meaning and vocabulary. Minuses: It would be nice to have a few phrases, instead of one, to demonstrate the range of meanings, tenses, plural/singular, etc. Also, there are a few errors in the English translations in either spelling, word choice or both (e.g., "L’autorità ha chiuso la metro. The authourity has closed the metro." and "La mia automobile ha il tetto giallo. My car has a yellow cealing.") [Note: to Diana Resca. Send me email if you would like me to correct these for you. About the Author
Simcha Guterman was born in Warsaw on September 1, 1903, the fifth child in the family. He was a lively and mischievous boy. Dearly loved by his brothers and sisters, Simcha emerged, early on, as a born leader. Later on, Simcha joined the Polish underground and fell in the Warsaw uprising.

A Unique & Unforgettable Account

A book in a bottle? Seemingly impossible, but fully realized. This is a personal history of both the Holocaust and the account of a son's journey to Israel after the war, and rarely are we entitled to such a unique combination of literary qualities: the life of both father and son, their talents and tragedies, and their incredible journeys. Written almost like historical fiction, Simcha Guterman tells of the events in his Polish community through hope, disbelief, war and tragedy--and with such rich storytelling language. Equally poignant, his son Yaakov of Kibbutz Haogen, fulfills a lifelong promise he made to his father as a very young boy: to unfurl the mystery, and find and tell his father's story (in which Yaakov, a well-published illustrator, also provides drawings). In addition, Yaakov adds his own story of his journey to Israel, equally insightful and moving.
This book is a valuable addition to the legion of Holocaust accounts, and more, it is an emotionally beautiful human story of the love, talents and ideals of a family.

a compelling and jarringly real account

What is so unique about this book is the perspective: written in stolen moments during a time of great tribulation, it is an unfiltered and intimate account of what was happening in Poland during 1940-42. It joins a body of literature about the Holocaust that is wide and varied, but very few of those texts give us this insider's view and show us how and what the Jews saw at the time, without emotional hindsight and perspective. It's not the innocent account of an Anne Frank, but the reckoning of a man who observed and judged; who knew these deeds should be recorded even if he had no way to put them into context with the larger horror that was not completely understood until later.
Simcha Guterman wrote with an audience in mind--he wanted these words to outlive him, and so we have a conscious telling, one that puts us in the shoes of the teller. At the same time, it is not self-conscious, focused on the teller, but an outward gaze, bent on capturing the mood, the people, the tragic history in the making.
This history is framed on both sides by the words of Simcha Guterman's son Yaakov, now a renowned Israeli artist, whose early memories mesh with his father's story, providing an added perspective. Yaakov's post-war story brings both his relief and his great sorrow home to the reader.
The images conjured by Simcha Guterman are echoed in the illustrations by his son, and the reality of the tale is enforced by the family photos included, reminding us that these were not just stories, but lives. This is an important contribution to the library of Holocaust literature.

"Seeing Things" Historically

Professor Wall's study of the rank and role of description and detail in literature of the eighteenth century suggests possibilities for study reaching both forward and backward from a seemingly circumscribed area of study -- and lines outward as well, for this visual arts scholar. Challenging received notions of paucity of description and superfluity of detail, Wall requires scholars to _see_ the making visible of things through historical lenses. The Prose of Things is provocative and engaging.

Great book, but the other book of the same author is much better

This is a very high quality book, chock a block full of information about construction sites, with lots of imaginative flaps, things that swivel, move, and fold. HOWEVER...it is not as good as "The Ultimate Book of Vehicles" by the same author. The "Vehicles" book is more appropriate for kids 3 years and up: It is still full of awesome flaps, swivels, and things that move, but it is simpler, with pictures of the vehicle, the name of the vehicle, and maybe a few names of the parts of the vehicle. You open up a flap to see inside, make it move, etc. My son found it very interesting.

The "Construction" is really aimed for older kids, I'm guessing 5 and up, maybe even older. There are just so many words on the page, and so much information. The flaps are not as interesting as the previous book, and I found many of the moving parts to be "sticky", and my 3 year old ripped quite a few out within a week of reading the book. We have not ripped anything from the "Vehicle" book.

So I would say if you have an older kid who wants to gain a lot of knowledge about construction sites, this book is for you. But if you have a younger child (3 and up, any younger and they'd destroy the book), get the "Vehicle" book.

Fantastic For The Young Construction Enthusiast

My two and a half year old grandson LOVES this book. He will sit quietly on his own looking through it, and carefully manipulating the multitude of moving parts (articulating boom arms, elevators to lift concrete buckets and move drivers into lifts, etc.). We read it together first, and set the groundless for how gentle he would need to be if he wanted the book to stay fun with all of its moving parts, and though he isn't particularly gentle with other toys (he loves to pretend monster trucks and elephants are stomping other things), he hasn't damaged any part of this book. I also highly recommend The Ultimate Vehicle Book (I think that's the name of it) by the same author.

UPDATE! My son tells me that the book has suffered some damage from unattended careless use at his house. I have the Ultimate Vehicle Book at my house, while they have the Ultimate Construction Book at their house. My grandson is careful with the book here, but I suspect there he gets a bit wilder. My son suggests the book is best for an older child. I'd say its a delight for a child to read with an adult or under your supervision/with assistance.

Irritating grammar errors but the kids love the moving parts

My boys, 5 and nearly 3, love this book! It's got lots of fun parts to open, unfold and generally move. What bothers me is the multiple grammar errors ("its" versus "it's," come on editors!) and poorly worded sentences. Did no one give this a once-over before printing?! Also, at least one of the flaps has the words printed upside-down, and I've only read two pages of the book, so who knows what other surprises abound. Shoddy work, but my kids have yet to notice.

Repetitive with annoying rape plot line

**Spoiler from 1st book. Not this one. But it was not really a difficult secret to guess in the first place**

In the first book, we learn that Cassidy snapped under the pressure of school and hockey and went on a sex/party bender first semester freshman year of college. (Come on, who didn't?)
But then she got caught in a dangerous situation and was almost gang raped.
What bugs me is how everyone REPEATEDLY refers to this event as her mistake because of the way she was "out of control" and the "bad choices" she made during that time. And then they go on to say how proud they are of her because she recovered so well from her "failure" and "shame" of the year before. These concepts are repeated SO OFTEN through out the book, it was painful to read so many times.
Now I understand how she could see failing all her classes and getting kicked off the hockey team as a failure, but the almost rape is included in that "failure" and "shame" so often, I was really getting pissed off about it.

If she wanted to have consensual sex with another adult, there's nothing wrong with that. But to say that she made mistakes which ended up putting her at risk of gang rape, is victim blaming at its finest. Reprehensible, and really made me angry as I said: it was repeated! Over and over and over.

Another annoying aspect of this book AND the first one, was how wishy washy and waffling Cassidy acted. The whole back and forth with the red herring boyfriend pissed me off, too. So obvious and insulting to the reader. At one point I just started skimming. It wasn't just Cassidy who was so immature. All of the characters acted more like high schoolers more than college students.

BTW there are a TON of sex scenes--almost TOO many, and they are all the same.

Abrupt ending here, too. This book is screaming for an epilogue.
So sorry I got into this.

okay, not great !

I read the first book and loved it so when the second came out I was excited. To me the second kind of lacked imagination, and depth and it kept going back to past trauma ( a little tooooo much) I do like this author but I think that if she had added some of this to book 1 we really could have ended it there. I think that it seemed to be reaching with the storyline and just seemed to fall flat. I hope this Author reads those who dont like books that get smaller with content and try and sting the readers along for five books, just to say what they could have in 1 book. I dont think I would stick around for a third book if one came out, the story seems done to me. For me I hated to see that after a short time she didnt seem into the guy who she claims to love, and then felt confused, it just didnt work for me.

Great series.

Another great book from this author. I can't wait to read more from her. I have read all her books now. Another locker room book. This one about Hockey. It is the conclusion to the Stay series. It is not enough to just fall in love. It is also about having to work at staying in love when sometimes it is easier not to try. Glad these two worked it out. Great characters. I also loved the fact that the two other people in this book weren't 'bad' either. One just made a mistake and the other just unfortunate to fall in love with someone who was already in love. They weren't scheming at all.
