No good for craft shows!!!

Like many scrollers I do craft shows to pay for my hobby. I bought this book as a pattern book to make the puzzles for craft shows. Since I bought it online I did not discover until I received it there was a statement inside the cover explaining you cannot make anything in the book for profit.

If you want to make them just for fun it is a great book but many of the projects are very involved so I probably never will invest the time to make them since I usually make one for my son and then extras for craft shows. This book will probably just sit on my shelf and I'll work on other projects I can make multiples of.

I really wish a review like this one was posted when I ordered if I had known I could not use the patterns for craft shows I would not have bought the book.

I bought this book about 25 years ago and still regret giving it away. At that time, I did not own a band saw that worked, jigsaw, drill press, or any kind of sanding equipment. All I had was my Delta Unisaw, several good blades and a Craftsman Molding Cutter Head with a lot of cutters. I still have them today.

I certainly did not want to cut patterns like these with a coping saw and scrape and sand away at it until the edges were 90 degrees. That would require a lot of time and elbow grease. Oh, I did own an old three wheel Delta band saw, but I could never get it to work correctly. The blade kept drifting to the right or left. That is when I bought Mark Duginske's book called the "Band Saw Handbook." After working on the saw for some time, I up and finally gave the book away with someone who bought the 3-wheeler saw. Looking back, I think something was wrong with the tilt mechanism on the upper wheel.

Now here we are approximately 25 years since I gave it away, with all the equipment I'll ever need. The book,"How to make Animated Toys is back in my hands again, I'm ready to begin making these toys.

I don't know if it is fate, karma, or whatever, but I now have 2 grandchildren. Both of them are boys. Noah, the oldest, he is now 20 months old, and Liam, is barely 3 months old. With the 40 years of woodworking experience I now have, I guess it was not time for me to begin building them.

These wooden toys are so well put together, it is going to be hard for my 20 month old to tear it apart and Liam will enjoy the same toys Noah did. They are that well built. If they are to last, these toys have to be built out of the right materials and assembled correctly with the best glue possible.

Greatest toy book of all time

I have his later book, but he uses some metal in the hinges in that one. This is the best book on my shelf and the kids adore the dinosaurs. The pegs actually work MUCH better and it's more in keeping with "wooden toy". I have tried about 70% of the toys in the book and they have all worked well. The Pteronanodon is probably the most difficult to get the pitman arms just right so it flaps it's wings easily. Some of the toys are for beginners; some are only for the very skilled. Detail is sufficient to complete the toys if you start with some easier ones you learn the techniques that are perhaps not derailed as well in the harder toys.

This DVD Is A Worthwhile Supplement To The Book

I already had the book (which came with a CD) but I have to say it was worth the extra cost to get the DVD. While the book does a good job of explaining what to do, the ability to see Greg actually demonstrating the techniques makes things much clearer. I saw several things that I was doing wrong and was able to correct them before I developed too many bad habits. If you want to learn to play the mandolin right I recommend getting the book and the DVD.

O God that I could turn back the clock and learn mandolin from these three books:

1. Beginning Mandolin, by Greg Horne
2. Intermediate Mandolin, by Greg Horne
3. Mastering Mandolin, by Wayne Fugate

Though this set of three is doubtless the best I've ever seen, I would like to point out that they're not for everybody.

I eventually went on to receive nearly all of the mandolin instruction these 3 books contain, but I had to get it piecemeal from various books: largely, in fact, from keyboard training and theory books. With the publication of these three books, that is no longer necessary.

The series takes a very mature approach to mandolin learning and goes much deeper than any other method I've ever seen. If your needs are casual, you should go elsewhere (I recommend Hal Leonard Mandolin Method). This book, heavy on theory and comparatively slim on exercises, is best for those who are majoring in the instrument or going to play it seriously for years. The training offered here is classical: rigorous and not user-friendly, sort of like those Mel Bay guitar methods.

Truly the last word in mandolin methods for the serious student. I fail to see how you could do a more comprehensive job.

I'm a beginner to both mandolin and guitar. I've dabbled with a number of other intro/beginner books for both instruments. This book has the best introduction to musical notation, how it relates to TAB and, most importantly, the fret board than I have seen thus far. If you are mystified by musical notation, and all those notes on the fret board, buy this book and you just might have the same ah-ha moment I had.

One demerit, 4 stars, only because the musical samples do not include suggested rhythm patterns beyond the simple pattern shown in the musical notation. Although that isn't such an awful thing as I have yet to find a book that pays special attention to mandolin as a percussive and/or rhythm instrument. Face it there is no shortage of hacks like me trying to play lead or melody.

I will be purchasing Greg Horne's Intermediate Mandolin book as well as the Mastering Mandolin book that follows when the times right.

Dr. Ferster has written an important book for anyone who is beginning to understand how data can inform decision-making, knowledge construction and acquisition. It is well-written, concise and organized in a fashion that provides informational value and insight for undergraduates and professionals alike. We will be hearing and seeing a lot more about this topic and this book is a very good starting point for those who are interested in this field.

Required Reading

Dr. Ferster's book has become required text for my undergrad students in Interactive Media Design. It not only is a clear and concise text on the history and theories of the subject, it also provides methodologies for application of these ideas. Ferster's ASSERT model is a useful tool in approaching interactive design. This volume is well-written and accessible yet not simplistic at all making it a great text for both students and expert practitioners. It is by far one of the most effective and comprehensive texts on the subject that I have found.

After doing a superficial inspection, I was impressed with the quality of the images and the overall organization. However, the text is confusing and sometimes the images don't seem to fit what is written. Several figures are too small to understand. Holsbeeck's textbook is a better option.

From the perspective of a physiatrist having done a a weekend course + a week of hand's on time with a radiologist, along with practice after hours during fellowsip whose is trying to integrate MSK Ultrasound into practice.....First came across this book in msk fellowship as it was recommended by a prominent physiatrist/ultrasonographer, it also came up as a solid pick from former head of the AIUM. Highly visual text, that clearly labels landmarks in transverse & logitudinal planes for bread and butter upper extremity and lower extremity sites of interest. I am making a second pass through this book before doing more hands on probe work. While not the classic that Dubin is for EKG, in this sense, they are similar: if you have this one down, you're going to nail the bread and butter, but not the more obscure stuff. You'll learn the cuff (trickier than elbow or wrist, but most in demand) + all the other peripheral joints, which is what you need for basic joint & tendon interventions. Does not cover peripheral nerve blocks/regional, which, if you're treating CRPS, or have other reason for a peripheral nerve block would be a bonus, yet this is not it's intent, still a solid choice.

One of the best textbooks in musculoskeletal ultrasound

The most authoritative and comprehensive book in the subject is Bianchi's book. Anyway, Practical Muskuloskeletal Ultrasound is the second best book in MSK sonography. On a daily basis, it is much easier to read than Bianchi's, with superb graphics, good details on ultrasound technique. The author is really involved with the subject, with clinical aspects being very objectively reviewed. We just need another edition coming soon so it can be up-to-dated with current practice.

The 4th book in the Langdon Prep series is awesome.

I loved this book. In response to the reviewer who has only read this book--and not the previous 3, I encourage you to begin the series from the beginning with "My Own Worst Frenemy." The character development and plot builds throughout the series. Yes, it can work as a stand-alone book, but everything just makes sense when you know the characters, their motivations, and the things that've been happening in Chanti's life this year.

This is my favorite young adult novel series. Chanti is funny, smart, flawed, and extremely likeable. Her adventurous are outrageous--but still plausible, given her mother's job as a Vice cop, and Chanti's natural curiosity and bravery. I was glad to see Chanti and Marco together again, though circumstances have a way of making their love life difficult. I loved this installment, and I hope Kimberly Reid writes another book in the series.

Guys and Lies.... Oh my...

Wow, it was really serious this time in the mystery that Chanti was involved in. She was facing quite a few obstacles, and the biggest one, Marco. Finally, it seems they are okay as a couple, and bam! After a game, they are in a freak accident. Chanti notices a few things and mentions it to Marco, but Marco acts as if nothing happened, and that’s when Chanti goes into detective mode. Something is terribly wrong, and Marco knows more than he is letting on. From then on, weird things start to happen around Chanti and Marco, but Marco tells Chanti to let it go. But she won’t, not when it seems Marco is in serious trouble, like life and death serious. Yikes!

This mystery as Chanti comes to realize is not just one layer, it’s even larger than what Marco is facing. So big, that even Cisco (He’s a mystery in itself. But Chanti is beginning to suspect something about him. Ooo… :) wants her help. Reluctantly, she agrees, and that’s when she comes to realize if Marco is as trustworthy/a good guy as she believes he is. I can’t wait to read the next book. A few questions were still left unanswered, especially when it came to Marco (What he did was something serious). I don’t know, but for some reason, I really didn’t like the way Marco acted a few times in this book. I got that he was in serious trouble, but still, some decisions he made, and the way he was always telling Chanti to leave him alone, I was like, really? She was like his best chance to get real help since the beginning. Oh, Marco... What will happen next...?

Usually I love, love, LOVE mystery books and ones set in school, esp if the term "prep" is in the school name.

So I was thrilled to be approved a preview copy of this book. I figured it wouldn't matter that much that I didn't read the first 3 in the series. I've jumped into a series before and read the first few after the newest one.

So this book was all set to be my new favorite. I was hoping for something along the lines of Kate Brian's Private and Privileged series, which BTW are the greatest 2 series ever written.

This one didn't measure up to my high expectations. It's a good book, with decent writing and good characters, but it didn't wow me or blow me away.

A great read both for builders and players

Note that as of February, 2015 this book and 5 other succeeding volumes are each available new from the publisher, the Guild of American Luthiers (www.luth.org), at a non-member price of $50.00 plus shipping, which was $10.00 shipped to Michigan, USA. Each volume is a huge (over 500 pages) goldmine of information on stringed instrument building. A great read both for builders and players, as well as for builder/players (g).

RATING FOR THE KINDLE VERSION - DO NOT BUY FOR KINDLE!

This book is really good, but I should have listened to the previous comment about the KINDLE VERSION being difficult to read. The footnotes are not accessible and where pictures should be it just says "can't put photo" or something. I bought this one week ago exactly and it will not let me return it. I wish I could return it and get the hard copy, it is really a good book but I do not enjoy reading it on the kindle because I feel like I am missing a lot and that is no fun.

What are you waiting for?

Great book. I can't believe I took so long to get around to buying it. It's not necessarily the type of book I'd read over and over, but I will definitely be lending it to friends to read. Just a very well written book and obviously a unique story. If you like Criminal Minds, Law and Order and those kind of shows you will love this book. Written from the prosecutor's perspective, there are details and explanations that are just...well, real.

Recommended.

I purchased the hard copy as recommend by another reader. Apparently the kindle version doesn't have the pictures that are in the hard copy. If that's the case (I can't be sure because I didn't order the kindle copy), I would HIGHLY recommend you purchase and read this one!

Helter Skelter is an EXCELLENT read

I loved this book. Incredibly interesting and detailed. Could not put it down. Have read it 3 times in a row. Such a sad gruesome true crime story. Vincent Bugliosi, prosecutor in the Sharon Tate and LaBianca murders captured details from beginning to end of each case. An amazing attorney and author. Recommended for any and all who enjoy true crime stories and can handle some gore and heartache:( as this book has it all.

Educational, yet amusing, way to introduce Asteroids and Meteors as seen through a Children’s book

This book “Book On Space: Asteroids and Meteors” belongs to a Children’s Books series published by Speedy Publishing. We love Speedy Publishing Children’s book series as they usually come with excellent photos and basic references that are quite suitable for the underage, for those small family members at home, for those parents who love to teach their children at home and this type of books serve well for teaching purposes at school too.

This book refers to Asteroids which are small Solar System bodies that orbit the Sun; they are also left over materials from the formation of the Solar System. Asteroids vary greatly in size, weight and are very rich in various metal structures. This book also refers to a meteoroid which is the one that burns up as it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere and it is known as Meteor.

With beautiful photographs and short references about Asteroids and Meteors which are depicted on this book in high definition (full color) photographs.

a book that's out of this world

This is a book in a series of books that I got for my six year old. My kids love science and I try to read to them during the sporting events instead of them playing video games. The books in this series have wonderful pictures along with little facts that go along with them. The words are easy for readers that have been reading for a couple of years but if your child is too young for that this book is great to read to them! The book is written in plan terms that kids can understand. It’s a great way to introduce science facts to kids. Each book in this series introduced one particular aspect of science and portrays it in a way that makes kids want to learn more. I plan on recommending this series for the pre-K teacher at my sons’ school who loves to introduce the kids to science.
What a great book on asteroids. The pictures are so detailed and very cool to look at. I’m planning a trip to the planetarium and I thought this would be a good book to read to my kids before so they can get a basis for what they will be hearing at the planetarium. Outer space has always been an interesting place for me and I’m excited to share that with my kids while reading this book.

Lacking in definitions, not a great resource for kids

This book, as the title suggests, only covers two topics, asteroids and meteors. Like other Baby Professor books this book is heavy on pictures and light on text. While other Baby Professor books are enhanced by the extra textless images, this book suffered from it because the images were practically a repeat of what has already been shown. The transition from the very first statement of the book into the discussion of asteroids was extremely clumsy, by mentioning that the Earth is bombarded with tons of dust and sand sized particles, but then immediately moves into the definition of an asteroid. It is unclear to the reader who doesn't know about this topic if those sand sized particles are asteroids or something else. There is no definition, it was just out of place and could have been written better.

When the book moves into talking about meteors and meteoroids there is again no transition. On one page they are talking about asteroids, then immediately on the next page it's talking about a meteoroid that burns up in the atmosphere is a meteor. There is no definition of what a meteoroid is for those who don't know. I had to scroll back to make sure I hadn't missed a page. A meteoroid is never defined in the book and a meteor isn't defined other than saying it's a meteoroid that burns up in the atmosphere.

This book is written in a style that would be ideal for a preschooler or kindergartener but the language used is more suitable for a first or second grader. With that said, the flow and lack of information made the book difficult to read and understand, which makes it less than ideal for children, who are the intended audience. Like other Baby Professor books, this one suffers from a lack of information, formatting issues, and basic comprehension flow.

I do not recommend this book to anyone. It lacks information, it's clumsy in it's writing and there are missing definitions, in addition to it being extremely short. You're better off finding your information online where you'll get more detail.

Hipolito is reflective of society’s perspectives (not just Hispanic society), of what constitutes a man, and the cruelty that leads to drastic and fatal decisions. The Second Rejection is a continuation of Matriculation, but as an adult and teacher, the author now finds his dreams dashed by his own people. Sewing Couches provides a sobering experience to anyone associated with the many sufferings caused by alcoholism. From a humorous perspective there is Cemetery Dating and Where is Heaven. From his personal experiences in Southwest Texas come The Checkpoint, Death of a Spider, A Green-eyed Cat and a Pink-eyed Rabbit and Torn Money.

About the Author
About the author: Born in Raymondville, Texas on February 3, 1953, to immigrant parents from Mexico, Sánchez first attend school in Colorado where the family lived until 1960. Sánchez was the second of four siblings that included two brothers and one sister. From 1961 to 1968 the family, now including two step-brothers and two step-sisters after his mother’s separation and remarriage, traveled through most of the western states as migrant workers. Sánchez never completed a school year beyond the third grade, although attending through the first two six-weeks of the ninth grade. In 1972 he obtained his GED. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1973. In 1974 he married Angelita Carrasco. He was stationed in Texas until 1976. From 1976 to 1979 he was stationed on Okinawa, Japan from where he traveled to various places in the Far East. Stationed again in Texas in 1979, he spent three months on temporary duty assignment in Europe. He separated from the military in 1981 and made his residence in Uvalde, Texas. He obtained a bachelor’s degree from Sul Ross State University in 1988, and a masters in 1992. From 1993 to 1996 he attended the University of Houston but failed to obtain the doctorate he was seeking. During the time he was in Houston he wrote for a bilingual newspaper (La Politiquera), whose owner, Alfredo Santos, established another paper in Uvalde (La Voz de Uvalde County), which Sánchez acquired in 2002 and operated until the end of 2013. In 2005 he returned to school and obtained a doctorate from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2009. He has written minor articles for the Handbook of Texas and the West Texas Historical Association Yearbook. He is married and has three children, Michael, Sophia, and Stacie. He co-authored Ethnic Realities of Mexican Americans: from colonialism to 21st century globalization, published in 2014. He is presently working on two manuscripts on the Ku Klux Klan and a manuscript of poetry.
