José Rizal (1861-1896) is the national hero of the Philippines. A man of exceptional intellectual, ethical and moral level who dignifies mankind, as Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), Benito Juárez (1806-1872), Mahatma Gandhi (1868–1948) and Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) do. He was enormously gifted too: a polymath who excelled as novelist, poet, painter, sculptor, linguist, surgeon and, above all, revolutionary at the service of his country's Independence.
However, his exceptionality only could come to light with the aid of his brother Paciano Rizal.
José Rizal is undoubtedly one of History's most documented heroes; about him there is a wealth of information. It is impressive, even touching, how he is revered by the Filipinos, in many homes as if he were a saint. Unfortunately, José Rizal is not much known outside of the Philippines, and Paciano Rizal not at all. In his country, Paciano is generally known as the big brother of the hero, but the information about him are scarce and nobody pored over yellowish and dusty documents to rescue him from oblivion. Nevertheless, without him the country's national hero would not have been José Rizal. Who paid the bill of that sad and glorious saga of the dawn of Philippine Independence was Paciano, and José's biographers recognize it duly. This biography, published in Portuguese in 2012, and now in English, is the first full account of this extraordinary person's life.
It was not an easy task, since about Paciano Rizal's life and personality there are very few objective data and that makes the analysis difficult. The brothers seem two celestial bodies dividing the same gravitational system: one with extraordinary brilliance, easy to observe, and the other invisible but with equal mass; its presence may only be detected by the other’s trajectory. Therefore, necessarily, this book also exposes José Rizal to readers. It is impossible to avoid him and there is no reason to do it. José and Paciano are as Siamese twins linked to each other through a vital organ: one cannot survive without the other. Paciano shall always be remembered for being the brother of the national hero who never would have attained this recognition without his aid.
The fact is that Paciano paved the way to the blazing glory that is José Rizal`s by merit.
A summary of Hungary's hero Saint Stephen, of Pedro I and Tiradentes, both heroes of the Brazilian Independence, of Simón Bolívar, South America's El Libertador, and of George Washington, USA's Father of the Nation, are given to explain better the author's appreciation of heroes. Of course, an absolutely personal judgment, not to be shared by people of those nations. Nevertheless, in his opinion, they valorize even more José Rizal, almost unknown outside the frontiers of his country.
The History of the Philippines is interweaved with Spain's and the nation born in the Asiatic islands resulted from the Hispanic colonial domination. Thus, besides the history of the Philippines, that of Spain is also described.
Paciano Rizal lived during the most vibrant period of his country. He witnessed the decline of the Spanish colonization, participated in the Independence struggles against Spain, fought in the Philippino-American War and lived almost for three decades the United States' dominion of the islands. All these events are treated in this book.
The author is aware that for some or many readers these chapters may be repetitious and boring. His counsel is that they should skip what is already familiar and keep to what concerns Paciano Rizal. A fascinating, noble and generous personality, who transcends his country's frontiers to rank among the benefactors of mankind.

I think that this is the only biography of Paciano Rizal, the older brother of the Filipino intellectual, author, poet, doctor, nationalist Jose Rizal. Well written and the authors respect for his subject shows. What is most astonishing about this work is it is written by a Portuguese whose imagination and sense of wonder was fired during a visit to Fort Santiago were Jose Rizal was held prior to his execution by the Spaniards when he read his farewell poem "Ultimo Adios". A must read for everyone interested about Jose Rizal and turn of the century Philippines.
