Rousing interviews with creatives that will inspire you to do the thing you’ve always wanted to do
By A. H. Wagner
I want to give this five stars just for the title. The Great Discontent is such a rousing, inspiring phrase in and of itself. It sounds like the name of a movement I want to join! I discovered this magazine about a month ago in a roundabout way, through a design website that recommended a designer’s online project inspired by The Great Discontent’s 100-Day Project. Anyone encouraging people to sign up for 100 days of making stuff just to make stuff was worth learning more about, I thought. Although The Great Discontent has sold out of their first print issue, it’s still available as a digital edition, thank goodness.
Certainly, reading the digital version is not the same experience as holding the print magazine in your hands and enjoying the full-size layouts and photos. Having said that, though, TGD stands as a fantastic publication on the strength of its content alone. This first issue is a collection of 17 interviews with artists, designers, photographers, musicians, adventurers, and entrepreneurs who have dared to take a leap toward their dreams. The interviewees are a well-rounded mix of up-and-comers, legends, and everything in between. Design veteran Debbie Millman is in here (I especially enjoyed reading her interview, as I can relate to her long, convoluted path to finding her passion), as well as Tavi Gevinson, editor-in-chief of Rookie, a really smart webzine for teen girls that I recently discovered. I didn’t realize until I read the TGD interview that Gevinson just recently graduated from high school! I thought she was in her early twenties at least. Wow. There’s also an interview with Alastair Humphreys, a travel enthusiast who has carved out a full-time living going on adventures and documenting them, and an interview with Scott Harrison, founder of charity: water, a nonprofit that provides clean drinking water to citizens of developing countries around the world. I had heard of charity: water but did not know its founder used to be a nightclub promoter. Talk about a career change! This is just a sample of the inspiring people you can read about in TGD Issue 1. What they all share in common is a determination to do whatever it takes to follow their passion, which universally requires risk and lots of hard work, no matter what the passion is.
It’s worth noting that founders/editors Ryan and Tina Essmaker took their own leap with this magazine. After three years of doing interviews on the side for what started out as a webzine, thegreatdiscontent.com, they quit their day jobs and ran a Kickstarter campaign so they could publish their first print issue.
The nice thing about the digital version is its accessibility: I was able to read it on my smartphone any time of the day, anywhere. On my lunch break, standing in line for takeout, at bedtime. It was comforting to have amazing inspiration in my pocket, so to speak. I also bought the digital version of TGD’s Issue 2 and look forward to reading that cover to cover soon. I hope The Great Discontent enjoys long-term success and continues to put out digital versions of their print issues, because for readers like me who are on a budget, it makes the content more affordable.
