Markedly better than Ghouls of the Miskatonic

Please see my review of Ghouls of the Miskatonic for the context of fiction based on the role playing game Arkham Horror by Fantasy Flight Games.

Ghouls of the Miskatonic was a serviceable novelization of Arkham Horror game play. It was diverting without being memorable at all. Dance of the Damned is so much better than that. Alan Bligh has a good deal of experience writing scenarios for role playing games, and perhaps has written a few short stories, although I have never encountered him before; this is his first novel. Well he has done himself proud. Dance of the Damned transcends the source material and ends up being a corking good read in its on right.

Some housekeeping: like all of the Fantasy Flight Game novelizations, this is a mass market trade paperback, currently listed for $8.99 (I recollect when I was a kid and such books were less than a dollar, while now this price seems pretty reasonable...but I digress). The excellent cover art is by FFG's resident creative genius, Anders Finer. The text runs from page 7 to 329. A brief note but informative about the author is provided; they should do the same for the artist. Editing was tight; I don't recollect any typos.

Daisy Walker (an investigator from the rpg) works as a librarian and investigator at the Orne Library of Miskatonic University, although she seems so much more competent than that (why only becomes clear much later). She is contacted by a friend for her student days in Kingsport, a very worldly and somewhat wealthy Annabel Fawn. Annabel is in trouble; her boyfriend has vanished under mysterious circumstances and has left her with a very small but very potent artifact. Annabel needs a confidant and somewhere to lay low, and comes to Daisy for help in Arkham. In the meantime, tough PI Tony Morgan (another stalwart from the rpg) has just been involved in a rather bloody showdown and ends up in the employ of Mr. Shawcross, a shadowy power broker from Copperhead Industries. Mr. Shawcross makes Tony an offer he can't refuse, basically to track down Maxwell Cormac. It turns out Cormac is Annabel's boyfriend and he has taken something of great interest to Shawcross. You can see how the plot threads intersect. Several groups are trying to get Annabel's artifact, as Daisy struggles to make sense of everything including her own damaged memory, while Tony is hot on their trail. It rapidly becomes clear that powers beyond normal are being exercised (or are exercising their influence on our plane), and relief of human suffering is not one of their primary aims. The plot moves along propulsively, converging in escalating violence in a series of encounters in Kingsport.

I very much liked this book. The prose was crisp, the characters came alive and the dialogue was quite well written. I never thought I was reading a scenario from a rpg; the book worked well as a novel. I found it hard to believe Mr. Bligh is a novice at this. I particularly liked the vivid physical descriptions of Kingsport. The major action sequences were appropriately horrific. The cliff hanger ending (this is a trilogy after all) did leave me wanting more.

There are some things I didn't particularly like, although they did not put me off. For example, the Terrible Old Man of Kingsport puts in a few appearances as some sort of mysterious wizard of unclear motivation or allegiance. I could have lived without that; I guess it was added to connect the reader to HPL's Kingsport.

My bottom line is I am happy to recommend this to fans of Cthulhu mythos fiction in general, not just fans of Arkham Horror. I am looking forward to future Cthulhu mythos works by Mr. Bligh, not just the next two books in the Lord of Nightmares trilogy. This is a book I would like to get in a larger limited edition format, heavily illustrated by Mr. Finer.

Not bad, but not great.

This relatively short book spends a large amount of time setting-the-scene and ends rather abruptly. (Much like many Arkham horror games now that I think about it).

The author tends toward over-description and perhaps over-flexes his vocabulary muscles a bit to much, however the story moves along very well after the first 100 pages. There are a few moments reading where I really could not put it down, so kudos there.

Without spoiling the ending, the end is more abrupt and feels it was somewhat rushed to complete. Nevertheless, I will be purchasing the second volume.

It's a light read and a good first effort for a new author. I look forward to seeing the series develop.

A fun read

I picked this book up when it first came out and read it quickly. I always love a good quick story especially one related to cthulhu. The story flows well, the characters are developed enough to enjoy them and the writer keeps a sense of mystery and the unknown as the story unfolds. While not a classical cthulhu tale it is a fun read and well worth your time. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good urban fantasy or cthulhu style adventure tale.

About the Author
Jordan J. Louviere is Research Professor at the School of Marketing, University of South Australia Business School. He is particularly known for pioneering work in the design and application of discrete choice experiments (also called 'choice-based conjoint') and he also pioneered best-worst scaling (also known as 'Max-Diff Scaling'). He is co-author of Stated Choice Methods: Analysis and Application (Cambridge University Press, 2000).

Terry N. Flynn Ph.D. is the Director of TF Choices Ltd, UK and Adjunct Fellow at the University of Western Sydney, Australia. He is globally renowned in the use of discrete choice experiments and best-worst scaling in health and allied fields. He is also a world expert in the scoring of quality of life and end-of-life instruments, particularly using BWS, and is a founding member of the International Academy of Health Preference Research.

A. A. J. Marley is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology, University of Victoria, and Research Professor at the Institute for Choice, University of South Australia. He is particularly known for his work in probabilistic models of choice, perception, and voting. He is a co-author of Behavioral Social Choice: Probabilistic Models, Statistical Inference, and Applications (Cambridge University Press, 2006).

Great for small group ministries

I am a Pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America out in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Bailey came to present this book to our congregation in November. His passion for Jesus' teaching in the Sermon on the Mount and it's ability to bring about justice to the disenfranchised was evident. Jim said we need to act out the Sermon on the Mount in our communities. It will transform you and your congregations. It was the foundation for many justice movements throughout history. We are now using it as a Bible Study resource in our home fellowship groups. The scholarship and exegesis are excellent and accessible to the lay person. Jim uses a transforming bible study method complete with pre-packaged questions and exercises for small groups that get us to use our left and right brain. I also use it as a preaching resource.

Mark P. Orbe (PhD, Ohio University) is professor of communication and diversity in the School of Communication at Western Michigan University, where he also holds a joint appointment in the gender and women’s studies program. He conducts research in interpersonal-intercultural communication, co-cultural communication, intergroup relations, mass media representations of underrepresented group members, and negotiation/intersection of multiple cultural identities. Over his career, has published ten books and hundreds of journal articles and book chapters. He is also founder and president of Dumela Communications, a full-service consulting company that specializes in providing services for clients committed to enhancing their communication cultural competencies.

Jon is also National Convenor of the 'Evidence, Research and Policy in Complementary Medicine' Special Interest Group at the Public Health Association of Australia, Associate Editor for the peer-reviewed journals Complementary Therapies in Medicine, Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies and BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine as well as Regional Co-Editor for the European Journal of Integrative Medicine.
GAVIN J. ANDREWS Professor at McMaster University, Canada. Gavin was the inaugural Chair of the Department of Health, Aging and Society from 2006-2011. A health geographer and predominantly qualitative researcher, Gavin's wide-ranging interests include the dynamics between space/place and complementary medicine, aging, nursing, specific phobias, fitness, health histories, popular music and primary health care. Much of Gavin's work is positional and considers the development, state-of-the-art and future of his sub-discipline. JOANNE BARNES Associate Professor in Herbal Medicines at the School of Pharmacy, University of Auckland, New Zealand. She is an honorary consultant to the World Health Organisation's Uppsala Monitoring Centre and a member of its herbal safety signal review panel. Joanne's research interests broadly include the utilisation, quality, efficacy, safety and pharmacovigilance of complementary medicines, particularly herbal medicinal products, and the roles and experiences of the pharmacist and other stakeholders in the safe and effective use of complementary medicines. Her work bridges the disciplines of pharmacognosy/natural products, pharmacovigilance/pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacy practice/health services research.
ALEX BROOM Associate Professor of Sociology and Australia Research Council Future Fellow at the School of Social Science, The University of Queensland, Australia. Alex specialises in the sociology of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine (TCAM) and the sociology of cancer and end-of-life care and he has led sociological studies of TCAM in Australia, the UK, Brazil, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Alex is currently leading a cross-cultural comparative study of medical pluralism in Australia, India and Brazil and a longitudinal qualitative study of end-of-life care in Australia.
