Cara Benedetto is a New York City based artist. She has exhibited at Taxter and Spengemann Gallery, Night Gallery, ICA Philadelphia, MOCA Cleveland, and Metro Pictures. Her writing has been published with Area Sneaks, Qui Parle, and Halmos. She has held recent writing workshops at Art Metropole in Toronto, and the Städelschule in Frankfurt. She currently teaches at VCU in Richmond.

‘Burning Blue’ is a smoldering gem of a novel. Aficionados of the romance genre will be pleasantly taken by the intense, boundary-breaking sex; startling, poetic turns of language; and full & complicated characters. People, bodies, and desires change, or maybe they just fight their way out differently over time and in certain places. Josey, our intrepid protagonist, is flawed, powerful, and open to the world; the risks that she takes to explore and realize her true self in love are perilous & inspiring. There is an insistent realness to these pages, a claim for the fantasy of & within every person, and the indescribable joy/pain/excitement when these dreams are felt together. “They ate like they looked like they f*****, in a deep blue ocean’s heat.”

Cara Bendetto’s Burning Blue is a story propelled by isolation. Josey, a 45-year-old former model turned artist, has left New York where her art career is budding to house sit for a friend in an unfamiliar, slower paced town. Without many friends, Josey’s days are filled with chatting up strangers at cafes and bars — this hardly leads to any genuine connections but certainly to adventure – a threesome on the beach, watching porn with a stranger in a coffee shop. When her relationships suddenly become genuine, piece by piece this feeling of isolation is broken off for better or for worse. Burning Blue is my favourite of the New Lovers series and I’d strongly recommend it to anyone, regardless of whether you’re into erotica.

Product arrived promptly
The color plates look really cool, and invite exploration into the Munsell Color System

However, I'm left a little disappointed:
1) The binder used is too small for the amount of pages contained. This causes pages to be constantly coming loose from the binder rings, and potentially getting damaged, I had to transfer the contents to a larger binder, and now page turning and protection are optimized.

2) The accuracy of the color plates is questionable. The very first page of color plates are the Neutrals, and they registered noticably warmer than the equivalent colors on my "Munsell Neutral Value Scale" (made by X-Rite). I compared between the two only because I noticed the "neutral" color seemed wrong when I first turned to the Neutrals page.

The next few pages are the Reds (2.5R, 5.0R, 7.5R 10.0R). The first three pages of reds appear almost exactly the same in hue, even though the pages are clearly marked as 2.5R, 5.0R, etc. There just didn't seem to be enough, if any, hue shift from one page to the next. To verify, I pulled up an electronic copy of the Munsell chart, and examined the respective Hue pages on the electronic document. There was an obvious difference between hue values within the electronic document whereas my book demonstrated nearly no difference at all between pages. All four pages of the "Red" hues were shifted towards the orange hue.

I stopped perusing my new book at this point, as I saw no reason to continue using it since there seems to be something wrong with the product in my opinion.

Note: This book does include a disclaimer that there my be some minor differences in the the color plates accuracy due to various reasons. The disclaimer is very reasonable, and I kept this in mind when reviewing the product.

I realize the only way to get near 100% accuracy is to purchase the "Munsell Big Book of Color" for nearly $1,000. Since I don't want to spend that much for a color book, I'm willing to accept minor discrepancies with the color plates within my book "Controlling Color ...", especially since it cost less than $100.

Unfortunately, the first few pages of my copy of this book displayed discrepancies that were far too obvious (to me), and rendered my purchase basically worthless.

A Color System that Makes Sense!

If you work with color in any career or hobby this book is a must! I am an artist and predominately use pastels as my medium. The number of pastel sticks from different manufacturers and the non-standard nomenclature for individual sticks are confusing and in many cases redundant. I can use the author's highly accurate color plates to sort my different sets and reduce the duplicates.

I can guess what you mean when you describe a color as Deep Eggplant Purple, or if you say 10.0PB 1/12 I know exactly what color you are talking about! A full set of Munsell color charts can cost north of $1,000... at the listed price, this book is a steal!

you should be happy with this alternative

If you want an affordable alternative to the Munsell big book (which will set you back about $1000 Australian dollars--yikes! !) get this book. The reviewer who complained that the red pages don't come up to the same standard as the $1000 book may well be right. But if you don't have a lazy grand to spend on such a lavishly printed book, you should be happy with this alternative. It gives you a lot more colour pages than the Munsell Student Set book, which however, I would also recommend. The combination of the two should prove extremely beneficial to any artist. As a painter myself, I've gotten great use out of this book already, which a friend passed on to me. Understanding the Munsell system has taken the agony and confusion out of colour mixing for me. Once you get your head around this system it's much clearer and more logical than any other colour system I've studied in the decades I've spent studying and practising painting and drawing.

"Innovative Strategy for Keeping Your Brain Young"

I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's [ALZ] in June, 2001. [See my review of Shenk, "The Forgetting Alzheimer's . ." on Amazon for further details.]
Unlike Shenk, this book is not directed to those of us with diagnosed ALZ, but rather to a broader spectrum of those who realize they have a failing memory, and wish to take steps to buttress and strengthen these facilities. I cannot comment directly on the effectiveness of the LOOK, SNAP, & CONNECT exercise for myself as my ALZ is a progressive regressive disease, with no plateau in prospect.
However, for those who fear that their memory loss is a precursor to ALZ, this book is a godsend. If you can strenghten your memory retention and recall by following the exercises, then you are NOT likely to have diagnosible ALZ.
For those of us with ALZ, this book is a treasure-trove of valuable information, such as the Glossaary, the pharmaceuticals used to deal with ALZ, and the Resources. Chapter 9: "Wise Up About Medicines" was particularly valuable. The subjective and objective tests in Chapter 2 were quite informative to me, a retired University Professor with a Mensa IQ, pre-ALZ, with apparent rapid onset at age 70+!
A very small caveat, Small, who developed the protocols for Aricept [Donepezil] waxes too enthusiastic for the amyloid vaccine which has been, perhaps temorarily, withdrawn from its human trial due to unexpected brain inflamations. The Index is mostly useless, perhaps due to an ignorant publisher: although Small mentions Shenk in the text, neither "The Forgetting" nor Shenk are found in the index nor the Bibliography.
I have already recommended "The Memory Bible" to friends who are worried about their deteriorating memory skills, and they report substantial benefits from LOOK, SNAP, AND CONNECT. [For the record, I scored an 88 on the Subjective Evaluation, and 10% on the Objective Measures. Sigh!]
