Hilarious satirical skewers!

Floyd Norman is a "Disney Legend" and that right there should tell anyone in the know that this book is worth checking out. Floyd worked for Disney under Walt and Eisner, and also for Hanna - Barbera.

Obviously, these cartoons were not intended originally to be sold, but rather to pass around the artist and animators. Compiled over his fifty years of experience in the field- the about 100 cartoons hilariously skewer the animation process and the high mucky-mucks who ran the studios. Eisner is the target of many of the cartoons, but even Walt is not immune here. Totally irreverent, both historical and topical- but mostly just hysterical.

Artist, Animators, Disney historians, or just folks who want a good laugh all will find this a good choice.

Full of Inside Jokes

This is one of those cases where the book's greatest strength is also its greatest weakness. Why? Well, as you may have guessed from my title, it's... yes, full of inside jokes.

In many ways this makes for a fascinating read. The view from the trenches of the animation industry is often a surprising one. Sometimes it's _exactly_ what you'd expect: the take on Michael Eisner, for example. Other times it's completely different. The view that emerges of Uncle Walt himself is unlike anything I've heard before - from either his detractors or his admirers. And in still other cases the author makes jokes about things that would never even have occurred to an outsider, not in a million years. Like the "dress code" at Pixar.

But for this selfsame reason, I found it very hard to actually laugh at these jokes. They're just not of my world. My primary reaction to almost all of the cartoons in this book was more along the lines of "Oh, that's interesting". And then, often, I would smile to myself. But not laugh. Not even once.

None of which is to say that I think the author is a bad cartoonist. I'm quite sure that many of his cartoons would not only have been a scream, but also very daring - for the audience for which they were originally intended. Which is to say, his fellow insiders.

But for us, the outsiders?

For us, it's more along the lines of an academic exercise. Or at least, it was for me.

So should you buy this book? That depends on what you hope to get out of it. If you're motivated primarily by curiosity, if you're looking for that insider's view, then read no further: this book is for you. Buy it now.

But if you're looking for something to actually make you laugh..?

In my humble opinion, no.

About the Author
Ronelle Alexander is professor of Slavic languages and literatures at the University of California, Berkeley. She is author of the two-volume Intensive Bulgarian: A Textbook and Reference Grammar. Ellen Elias-Bursac is a language teacher and a literary translator. She taught BCS for ten years at Harvard University’s Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures and now lives in Europe.

Outstanding and a worthy successor to Magner's old course

I wish that I had used this course when I was learning Croatian. In a way I look at this new course by Alexander and Elias-Bursac as an unofficial upgrade on Thomas Magner's course, "Introduction to the Croatian and Serbian Language" which I was using. They apply the ideas of balancing the standards, showing accentuation patterns of words, excellent coverage of grammatical topics and useful glossaries. Alexander and Elias-Bursac have necessarily added modern touches by extending the exposure to Bosnian and updating the dialogues to reflect life in the early 21st century.

If you're serious about learning from scratch Bosnian / Croatian / Serbian / Serbo-Croatian / whatever you want to call it, this is THE course that you should use. (Note: As of 2009, the authors are providing answer keys to the exercises for free downloading at the website for this book. Run a search on Google using the terms "bcs grammar textbook") Unlike courses such as "Teach Yourself Serbian" or "Colloquial Croatian" for example, the authors here have truly designed this course with English-speakers in mind. Not only does the textbook indicate the patterns of accentuation and tone of every word, but it also gives in-depth grammatical explanations that often use English as a reference/point of comparison. In addition, the appendices have charts that show declensional and conjugational patterns while the glossary shows the aspectual pairs of verbs - something that some courses and dictionaries fail to do.

It is also noteworthy and praiseworthy that the standard variants of BCS are presented equally along with the distinctions between "(i)jekavski" and "ekavski". All of these help to give a sense to the user of the "fuzziness" of what some people insist as constituting "proper Bosnian", "proper Croatian" or "proper Serbian". The juxtaposition of texts in all three variants was indeed instructive and made me realize how parochial are some "debates" about Serbo-Croatian vs. Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian (which reflect more the political situation).

It is worthwhile to buy the CDs that have the dialogues and readings of the textbook so that you may get some audio exposure to the language. The reference manual of grammar that corresponds to this textbook is in my view not required as the textbook's explanations are sufficient. However, I do recommend that reference book if you want to go into detail on the grammatical explanations of the textbook or get a readable and balanced survey of the sociolinguistic topics regarding "Serbo-Croatian" and now "BCS".

the one to go for!

I was very satisfied with this book. I bought it at the last minute before my trip so only had time to work through 2 chapters, but even those set me in really good stead. I now have every confidence that what I learn as I continue to work through the book before my next trip will be accurate and valuable. Even the vocabulary which seemed a bit obscure to be introduced so early in the book proved very useful - the authors obviously really applied their knowledge of the language(s) well in structuring the lessons.

The book appeared to be geared more to classes or small groups, but as long as you are prepared to put in the effort I think anyone trying to learn independently (like I am) will find it fine. The little explanations of points of grammar were clearly explained and helped me communicate much more easily than if I had relied on a phrasebook or dictionary alone. Having said that, the glossary in the back of the book is in itself surprisingly extensive - in some instances providing more information than my dictionary.

If I were to make a small criticism it would be that the book could be improved by explaining what the different "cases" (e.g. genitive, accusative etc) all meant in the English language before discussing how they are formed in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian; it was to some extent assumed that the reader was already familiar with these terms, which English schooling has failed us on! However, once I found out what these terms meant (good old mum!), the way the B/C/S was presented in the book all made sense. It is a very good buy, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn these languages!

This is a great book! I have been looking for a really long time for a textbook for Serbian language. I am so glad to have found this one. It discusses the different dialects and other differences between Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian, and in doing so is really a three-for-one language book. Mind you, there are subtle differences between the languages (as they are really just different dialects) but they are there all the same. I think it is about time someone does a book on Serbian language - one which goes well beyong the basics (travel books, etc.) and really delves into the complex grammar with examples. First-rate book! Oh, and I highly recommend the sister book - BCS Grammar. You can find it online too - great book which go in depth into the complicated grammar (and reasons why it is what it is based on the different regions of the former Yugoslavaia.) Beneficial to have this book also, if you need more explanations on grammar. I have them both, and they are both superlative.

Outstanding biblical study

Dr. Jack Van Impe presents an outstanding verse by verse study of the Book of Revelation. He does not give just give his opinion, rather he shows the reader how to come to understanding of the sometimes difficult verses of the Book of Revelation by relating them to verses in other books of the bible.

One review of this book suggests that Crisis and Catharsis by Adella Collins will give you a better understanding of this book. But Collins in this book seems not to believe the bible is the word of God and seems determined to prove John did not author this book.

If you believe the bible is the word of God, then this book is for you if you want to understand the book of Revelation.

Pretty Bad But Better Than Nothing

I wrote after just scanning and though it okay. But after more fully reviewing it, I'm under-impressed. David Busch has written several camera specific books, most of them have received good reviews. But this book is not in that league. It is written for people who want to turn their a6300 into a sophisticated point and shoot camera. Extensive coverage of all the "scene" settings, and features that only work on jpeg images, ready for uploading to Facebook, not for serious photographers (There are a few bows to shooting RAW and to using more sophistication, but not many. The sections on face recognition, eye focus, and follow focus are far too short to be useful. This is one example.
I am very disappointed in the factual errors. I would send the thing back if there were any alternative. But Sony's own manual is so bad, this is the only option.
Gary Friedman's book on the a6000 is better written. Darrell Young's books on all the Nikons are great, but he doesn't have the Sonys in his sights. So this is what we have. If there were an alternative, I would go down to one star, but three stars is generous.

Like any book on a camera

Like any book on a camera, your mileage will vary based on what you need to learn. I spent a plane ride reading the book on my Kindle App (the printer version would be far easier to see the pictures) and discovered several settings that I had not paid any attention to in the past. The book is well laid out and an easy read - it's not bogged down with a ton of jargon, but it is also not a Dummy's Guide. The more you understand about basic photography the more use this book will be.

I would recommend people looking to maximize their use of the A6300 pick this book up. It's far better than the manual and due to Sony's odd naming in the menus will probably help many people get the most out of their camera.

An excellent, DETAILED book with so much information it's almost impossible to absorb it all even with repeated readings. This book tells you how to do things you never even dreamed of--or considered--doing with an a6300. It transforms a "point and shoot" camera into something incredibly varied and flexible.

In 1993 he set up the film production company Arden Sutherland-Dodd. His first book sold over half a million copies. He has a weekly column in the Independent and recently opened a photographic gallery in his hometown, Petworth.

It is never too late to be creative and live your dreams

Pushing sixty and laid off from my last job of a decade made me put things into perspective. I started out at my last company (over a decade ago) able to be creative and resolve tense situations and technical snafus with total carte blanche. But due to several company merges, the last five years found my creativity shut down in lieu of taking direction (with no input allowed) for day to day operations. I turned my brain off and just waited as the layoffs got closer and closer to me. Now that I am free again, I found this book a great help in kick starting my brain. After reading it I decided I would take a "Roman Holiday" - just spend the summer doing what I want to do before I choose a "job" or "career" to go back to.

I am taking all sorts of classes - music, writing, painting, investing (so I do not waste any money and do not stress out about having the summer off), meditation, tai chi.

I read through this book once. Now I am taking a page a day, and journaling my own thoughts to what I have read. What I am finding out is that I am birthing a different person from a month ago, a year ago, a decade ago. And that new person will have something fun and wonderful to offer in the new work I choose that brings me joy.

I highly recommend this book if you feel your creativity has abandoned you. Your mojo has not left you - it is just waiting for you to awaken it from a long nap and for you to start playing together again.

This is an invaluable little tool of a book...

This along with his others are short, insightful, and must haves in actual book form. The ability to have this and peruse through when ideas or insights just aren't coming is priceless. It helps jar your thought process and helps you too think. This is an invaluable little tool of a book you'll refer to for years. This is my second copy to replace my former.

Ronald Carter is Research Professor of Modern English Language in the School of English at the University of Nottingham, UK. He is the series co-editor of the Routledge Applied Linguistics and Routledge Introductions to Applied Linguistics series. An Interesting Open University Set-Text that Explores the Potential for Creativity and Inventiveness in Everyday Discourse!

Ronald Carter's publication, 'Language and Creativity: The Art of Common Talk' is an attempt to build on existing theories of creativity in order to examine whether language can be a creative phenomenon in everyday conversation, or specifically reserved for the solitary literary genius. It asks questions such as whether we create language ourselves or simply build upon existing idioms within the general mass populace, bringing about an argument as to whether anyone can create linguistic creativity, either with conscious effort or via literary devices.
The book itself is in actuality the first set-text for the Open University Level 3 module 'E301: The Art of English', which explores the English language as a creative phenomenon in both spoken and written interaction. I chose to take this module as an optional course in order to complete a BA in Humanities with English Language, and this book certainly aids in helping to understand what the OU's course materials attempt to teach its students. In fact, Ronald Carter himself provides a few articles and chapters to the E301 module, so this first set-text is an excellent addition to what is an already interesting academic journey.
Published by Routledge in 2004, it can be said that the examples that Carter provides are a bit dated, especially since, in 2014, we are steadily entering into a greater technological age with smartphones, and computer tablets, for example. (This goes for the course itself I would say.) However, Carter's utilisation of the Cancode database and heavy focus on other such linguistic corpora illustrates just how he attempts to explore everyday language as creative in its ubiquitous presence.
Splitting his publication into three parts of 'Backgrounds and Theories', 'Forms and Functions' and 'Contexts and Variations', Carter outlines examples and explorations of spoken discourse taken from the Cancode database across six chapters altogether. He focuses on the clines and continua of linguistic creativity, with background exploration of theories from fellow linguists and scholars, in order to examine how our everyday speech can be seen as a creative act, using viewpoints from various cultures and time periods.
I would say that 'The Art of Common Talk' is definitely not intended for light reading; far from it. The E301 course team gives its students two weeks to read this set-text, and I found it extremely difficult to follow for the first few days. However, once I got into Carter's format and began to understand his terminology better, I became enthralled with the idea that language can have the power for fictional worlds to be created on a daily basis, via our creative methods of language usage. We ultimately have power over our spoken interaction, which can be either intertextually influenced or created via interdiscursive methods.
If you are an aspiring linguist and decide to pick up this book as some exploration of the art of spoken discourse, please be patient and take your time in coming to grips with Carter's own specific methodology regarding his subject matter. I would give the same advice to Open University E301 students, and I would also advise that you work with your tutor and fellow students in examining Carter's viewpoints from a critical perspective, especially since it is more than likely that the OU will expect at least some reference to this material when submitting your tutor-marked assignments online.
